I bought the five digit Submariners when they were new from an AD. Wore them and enjoyed them. When the six digit came out I transitioned over and have never looked back. The build quality is better in my opinion and the Glide Lock clasp is the best around and one that makes models without it seem just not exactly right. I had been a fan of the 114060 until I purchased the 124060. Now the most worn watch in my collection. Three day power reserve, plus one second a day in timing and a joy to wear. Taking into account that the watch would be new with a five year warranty, updated case, bezel, crystal, movement and clasp the choice is clear for me, 124060.

If this is your only Sub or Rolex go with the modern reference. Its just a better daily watch. If you have a collection already then go with the 14060M. Love that watch.

Well that’s awesome then!

This is a tough call! I love the neo vintage look and feel of the 14060. I've owned this watch at least three times, mostly back when I was in regular buying/flipping mode. I remember the first one I got from a forum member when they were trading in the $2500-3000 range. He and I traded the watch back and forth a few times. It wears a LOT smaller than a modern 124060. Smaller watch overall and the hollow end link 93150 bracelet is lighter weight and has that charming rattle to it.

The 14060 is a longstanding classic watch and really a nice piece. I particularly like the 2-liner...such a clean dial!

As others have said, if you have a collection then add a 14060. If it's your primary watch, you might like the 124060 a bit more. Certainly has a bit more of a bling factor and wrist presence with the larger 41mm size and the ceramic bezel. Plus the glidelock bracelet is outstanding.

You can put an easy link on a 14060. It is my daily, with maintenance it will outlast me. I prefer less bling

If you want vintage vibes get a 4 digit.

Of course, it is not even a serious comparison, modern watches are light years ahead of the 20+ yr old models in almost every parameter. Ok, people may be sentimental to their beloved timepieces they might have had for decades but cmon, lets be serious !

Ironic topic as I'm in the same boat. I've daily'd my 14060M for over a decade now. Has been absolutely beat but its perfect to me and fits like a glove. I love my new CHNR (GMT) but can't get over how chunky it wears..

Just grabbed a lightly used 124060 (arrives friday) and if I don't fall in love she's going to get traded towards an LV I think. the 2-liner M stays regardless

Get the 14060M, you won´t regret it! But then I´m biased, as my everyday watch is a slightly older 14060 2-liner. Classic Rolex. It´s superbly comfortable and, if well serviced and regulated, is still capable of keeping excellent time...mine runs about 2 secs fast per day, good enough for me! Buying from your AD is the best idea, they should be able give you the service history. That´s important, because the rubber seals do need replacing. Anyway, here´s my old faithful...

I’ve had two tritium 14060s in my time and haven’t kept either. Lots of charm and character with beautiful cream toned patina on the lume, some marks and fading on the aluminum bezel insert, all the things that make the 5 digit sub special (in my opinion). Loved the box and papers from the 90’s, the whole package. But I could never get the fit quite right. Some days it’d be above the wrist bone, some days it’d slide practically onto the back of my hand, just depended on the weather. It drove me crazy. I tried twice though but ultimately quit it.

Never owned a 12 model sub but did have a SD4K SeaDweller and despite the thickness compared to a sub it still was always comfortable. Glidelock made a big difference in the wearing experience and enjoyment for me.

The 12 sub is simply a “better” watch in paper and you get what you pay for at retail. No argument. I don’t think the 5-digits are worth the money at the price they demand today, but that’s just my opinion. People value things differently in the watch game so you just have to try them, with your gut, and not look back.

Good luck!!

So many incredible pieces displayed, thanks for sharing everyone.

In the end I couldn't decide, so alongside the 124060 I'm waiting on (my new daily), the AD is going to call me if / when a 14060M comes in.

Edit:
And suddenly I see why there are so many collectors on this forum!

I had the 14060M TWICE. Now have the 124060.

The older version has its “ vintage charm” and is lighter if that’s your preference. But all things considered, it would be the 124060. I prefer the glidelock bracelet, bigger hour markers that provide greater contrast to the black dial, and AR coating on the underside of the crystal. Definitely has MORE presence AND clarity.
