Gold coronet on 16014 Buckley dial vs. silver coronet
Hi all. Just purchased a mid-80s white Buckley dial 16014 from a very reputable vintage rolex dealer who represented the watch as all original, etc. I didn't realize it at the time of purchase from the pictures but when I received the watch in the flesh, the coronet at 12 o clock is yellow gold colored rather than the usual silver colored. I am wondering whether this means the dial is not correct for the 16014 and therefore whether this dial was swapped out from another watch and whether this calls into question the originality and correctness of the dial on this 16014? Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

A yellow gold Rolex crown suggests that the dial was originally intended to be fitted to a watch with some yellow gold features (bi-metallic 16013 or all gold 16018) and almost certainly would not have left the factory on a 16014.
Without detailed documentation it is impossible to know what has happened here but it is possible that the dial was changed at the AD prior to or at the time of sale, so there is a chance (allbeit small) that it left the AD like that. That then brings into question what all original means; does it mean it is exactly as it left the factory, or is it as it left the dealer, or can changes to dial, crystal, winding crown, etc. be made and it can still be described as all original? Sellers' descriptions are often inaccurate so it is usually best to ignore what they say and evaluate the watch against catalogue photos, adverts, others for sale or known examples of the model. Unless there are several examples of 16014 models with yellow gold crowns on Buckley dials around or some other evidence that this is a correct configuration I would assume that this watch has had a dial swap at some point, possibly to make it more attractive for sale. |

Can you post a picture? Just curious as there are variations to the dial. I am not saying it is appropriate, as it is accurately discussed by @CTech.. |

Buckleys, I have found to be a bit all over the place eg most steel have black hands, but not all, and also seen different crowns. Ps I’m not sure model Ref here - they might be earlier, and I’m not a JBuckley Dial expert….
Here are four that show those discrepancies I think, the second light champagne one from left is full set (one owner) and is clearly steel but has a light gold coronet…. go figure !

What color are the hands? Photos are always welcome, and often save time and avoid confusion.

Shows well but as you have mentioned, the Crown appears not to belong. But whatever the reason is, as mentioned by CTech, anything is possible. |
