Rare APH dial?

Hello everyone!

I just purchased this Daytona from a friend of mine (no box, no papers), and while inspecting the dial, I noticed it seems to be an APH dial.

However, I couldn't find much information online.

Any opinions from experts?

Thank you

If you observe carefully, quite a number of grey listed 520 are “APH” dials. It is more of a ploy to get higher prices than anything significant.

If it is, will you pay your friend the difference in value?

Have to agree just like the hundreds of other dials made over the many decades.Dials are made in 3 different factories now all owned by Rolex so there always have been and always will be tiny variations to most all dials over production Today this term rare is often used by watch sellers to extract more money from buyers willing to pay.

It's a cosmetic feature, like upside down 6's, rail dials, and the like.

Some folks like to collect and discuss them, others don't really pay attention to them.

This is correct. I think it's a APH dial, yes

It is not rare and too much is made of it, I believe of daytonas made 2011+ the majority are APH. I have a white dial APH and I think it is silly for those sellers that list it as an APH dial like it is some scarcity. Congrats on your daytona btw.

It’s a dial variant. Some will say it’s irrelevant. I’d counter that most everything we define as value in a Rolex is dial based - red 1680, double red 1655, gilt 1016, tropical dials, the Paul Newman dials, blackout 14270, John Mayer Daytona, Hulk, white dial Daytonas etc. How much value you ascribe to a particular dial variant is a different matter.

Whilst iit is not rare to have an APH dial, they do command a premium of approx £2-£3k over ‘normal dials’. Produced in 2010-11 according to our local AD.

Only fools pay a premium for this mass produced dial.
After paying a premium for the APH dial one should pay a premium for the “mistake” dial on the GMT.

An error isn't something that last for 5 years and are in half the watches produced.

APH rarity and asking more for it, is a Grey dealer tactic....dont fall for it.

Manufactured special feature with upcharge. If the watch is an excellent example then buy it. I wouldn’t buy it because of this APH thing.

APH is an error dial and a bad one at that. Grey dealers started marketing it to gather interest in these older Daytonas, but it was not special at all.

APH dial is what a buyer who over paid will say it’s rare.
