Recommendations for Home Safes...

Hoping to get some name brands / price recommendations.

Will likely use for the watches (obviously) and perhaps some camera equipment, passports etc.

Debating between a standalone safe Vs. Wall. I live in an Edwardian condo - nldg was built in 1905 - so I would rather not burrow into a wall if I can avoid it.

This question really boils down to how safe do you want it to be. Given enough time you can get into all safes. So then you need to make reasonable assumptions as to how long will a criminal have, how determined they will be, and is what is inside worthy of the expense, weight and size you will need to commit to based on your assumptions. Also in the assumption matrix will need to be placement and fire proof requirements. Weight and money go hand in hand for increased security. Given a specific exterior space requirement the interior space available will diminish with greater security and protection. And of course is your back strong enough to move it should you ever relocate.

Most gun safes are really only considered "security cabinets" with burglary ratings. True "tool rated" jewelry safes are remarkably expensive and heavy.

Hey Bill,I just bought a Sentry safe that is fire, heat, water proof (2hrs).I like the heat because it will protect computor dics, passports ect.It comes with a $40,000 insurance package if the safe fails. It has advanced electronic entry with up to 6 codes that can be given to others and changed daily should you feel the need.It also has a key if you choose to use it(But dont have to).I like it because it can be bolted to the floor or wall.Dimensions are 30by30by30 for under 500 us dollars.Good hunting, hope this helps.

The best thing you can do is

The best thing you can do is to get replacement cost property insurance, and not worry about the safe. Or get both but don't rely on a safe alone, they are not that safe.

This won't cover the heartbreak of losing an heirloom.
