Posts like this amaze me, celebrating buying watches that they don’t really want and jewellery in order to get a watch they could pick up on the grey market for about $4k dollars over retail.

I say this as somebody who doesn’t advocate the grey market either, but AD’s are not your friend and thrive on this kind of behaviour.

One of my favourites though and wear it in good health.

Did you read a passage that I missed? Possible, though from what I gathered this was a win for the OP. Got earrings he was otherwise going to purchase and got the watch. Not sure how he would be better off going grey and spending more money for much, much less…

Some posts sound like sour grapes from people who bought grey…and paid a premium.

I read his post further down the thread quoting that he has purchased ‘ watches including two Tudors’ none of which seemed to be of interest judging by the lack of enthusiasm and the way it was written.
If it was just the earrings I’d agree with you but to purchase all of the above and still wait over a year for arguably the easiest GMT to be offered, I’d personally not see that as a ‘win’ for anybody.

Still the $2k is less than $4k, gets a new AD watch and “free” set of ear rings.

Yeah. I purchased Tudors that I continue to wear in the rotation and thoroughly wanted and enjoy, I purchased items for my fiancé that she wears daily, I purchased a Submariner LV and a Submariner LN, the LN was bought as a first purchase without previous spend after 30 days…

I pretty much expected this topic to morph into what it has which is why I have mostly avoided TRF the past few months. At the end of the day, I will have a perfect new BLNR on jubilee that I have wanted for a while on my wrist this holiday season while I enjoy it with my fiancé. Oh, this will be one that I purchased at retail because I chose to purchase items from a store at which I have a relationship. Happy Holidays!

OP you did everything right. Congrats on a great watch.

Buying from AD definitely has its benefits for something as special as a Rolex watch.

Gray dealers do all kinds of shenanigans like polishing the watch and selling as "unworn", swapping the bracelets and selling as "no white tag", etc.

Honest question: It makes sense to me for ADs who have multiple other brands that purchase history will factor into whom is allocated an in demand piece, but for the rare stand-alone AD, how do they decide where/whom pieces are allocated? A true waitlist or just whomever is more favorably viewed at that location and near the top of the mind?

Same thing at the closer AD: Rolesor sub LN, Rolesor Datejust, James Cameron and a couple Tudors over the last year and a half. Actually have more spend at this closer-to-me AD. I was originally told by the end of this past summer, then by the end of the year, then 1st quarter 25’.

This being said (and these were all items I wanted anyway) it still seems as though it will take a little spend and an overall “regular” relationship with an AD to acquire any SS GMT at retail - and even then, have to still manage to deal with a decent AD.

That's how it's done. Spend organically on items you really want and good things come to you.

She informed me yesterday that the earrings should be in next week or so and I figured, what the hell, I asked her this morning about the watch and basically if it would happen by year’s end.

She just called and said they had received a shipment so it’s mine. I will be grabbing his and her Christmas gifts within a week.

It is great to get a call

from the AD. The call that you been waiting for a long time may sounds a bit unbelievable. I remember when I got the call from my AD to pick up my SS Daytona after being on the list nearly six years.
