Condition check 6263

Hi. Seeking some eyes on this 6263...thanks for any help & opinions.
I know there are reflections on the crystal and dust… But I am assured it's just that. My concern is the hands/dial/case. Anybody see anything that would turn them away or red flags?

What’s the beginning of the serial number? Do you have photos of the engraving and movement?

The dial is a bit of a wreck, especially the sub-dials, but the case is suspiciously pristine and super fat. That’s a red flag right there. Doesn’t mean it’s not all legit. It just means that it’s odd and would require further scrutiny.

Personally, I wouldn’t pursue it based on the dial condition alone. The white sub-dials often take on some patina, but in that example they just look very dirty. You’re also missing some tritium on a couple of the dots and the hand lume ain’t great. And more minor, that’s a service crystal.

Here’s my (former) black 6263. This is what you should look for in sub-dials.

Those sub-dials would give me no joy in owning this watch.

Appreciate it gentleman. I told the seller the same thing about the sub-dials…very dirty/too much patina, whatever you’d want to call it.

Like the guys said, the dial & hand surfaces are so scratched and tarnished in the pics they make you wonder what gives.
Even some of the text fonts look sloppy to me when zoomed.

Richard, are you looking to get a 6263 now? Have you tried one on? Might be too small for your wrists, certainly smaller than your RM :p

Hi B. Yes, I’m shopping around. I’ve had one in the past, the size is fine, as my wrists are just under 7 inches. So I’m happy with anything from 36-44mm depending on the shape of the watch, etc….

I wasn't sure if I could be more envious with your car collection and watch collection, but a 6263 might just put it over the top!

Well thank you! I appreciate it! We will see what happens. Yes, this would be a cool addition for sure, but hunting these things is like a minefield.

Saw this one in one of the groups. Would have helped the members out here to know this seller is asking 58K Despite the dial, that's cheap imo.

Big Reds' routinely go above 100K now. Food for thought.

Yes, but it’s cheap for a reason. If you’re going to acquire a Big Red, I wouldn’t go that route, no matter the price. It’s just not a desirable example.

And $58K is still a ton of money. We have a tendency to lose perspective in this nutty hobby. You could buy a really nice BMW 4 Series Coupe with that money.

No doubt about that

Which group did you see this on? Haven't seen it hit Moda albeit not much vintage passes through there. Would love to find more dealer groups for vintage.

That is quite the acronym they have there.

Thanks for referencing.

To be devil's advocate, and to give another opinion on collecting strategy, and my perhaps unhinged thinking (but its worked for 46 yrs of collecting, not had trousers pulled down so far) - I'm tbh marginal on that at $58,000 - or better still $50k haggled...

I really don't get emotional on pieces and I'm not a seeker of perfect just original (and want to ensure I'm financially safe in the piece - even after a big mkt wobble).

It has to original Rolex, preferably period, not service, but never pay anywhere near retail for anything, and many of my early 52-64 really rare pieces have less than perfect dials....so a if I buy another well priced they don't stick out in bank safe/on the wrist over many others I have. Plexi is fresh service btw.

Back to dial. I suspect on the wrist it doesn't look anything like as bad as macro photos. In the back of my mind I also know where to source either a silver or black std dial BR or SIGMA should I want one (c $20-28 k).

Start point - A good/fine service dial small red is c $45-48k. That's my build up point for this.

For me the number 1 factor at $58k, and over the dial condition, is the question is rest of the watch legit. If ever a watch is a) v cheap, b) small red or c) scratched/marked dial I do a especially keen check...as some discarded orig dials and discarded service dials (that can be bought from $2-3k can find their way into fake cases etc).

The case looks light wear so an engraving check is KEY ($15-22k) and case back (dated and/or orig stamped they are pricey $5-6k alone), cal 727 - lots of re-worked non Rolex dodgy ones so need checking ($7-10k +). Bezel, insert ($3-6k) end links ($1k if correct number!!).

The pushers, crown, 78350 etc are less critical to me personally as i have a few of each, but should be legit of course as adds up to a few $000'.

If all checked out, and that was in UK at c £43-44k, I'd probably have a bash at snaffling it ...

What would make a dial look like that?

Probably slightly unsympathetic handling and/or storage when out of watch imho.
