Need help with gmt ii coke !!!!!
Let me start off by saying thank you for reading my first thread, But now down to business. Today I happen to be in the mall and decided to do some window shopping while looking around I saw a GMT II Coke it is a P serial # which puts the year at 2000 now they are asking for $5,000 flat with tax it has no box or papers except the service papers from RSC in NYC. I left a $1,500 refundable deposit and I am suppose to pick it up this Wednesday (10/21/09). So my question to you is am I over paying and if so by how much?,what is the price I should be paying?, If i decide to sell it how much could I get?, and Is a Gmt II Coke rare or hard to find ? ....

IMO you are overpaying.
You could get one from here on the TRF sales forum from a trusted seller for about 1500.00 less and with box and papers. If you pay 5K for this timepiece, you will not get that back.

Definitely overpaying. Like the previous post said, you can pick one up for about $3,500 with box and paper.

Not too bad. You can find one if you keep your eyes open.

It's not hard at all to find a Coke GMT. You can also buy a Pepsi or black insert model and buy a coke insert for not a lot of money. Five grand is way too much.

I have an "A" series 16710 GMT Master II "Coke" which I purchased from a local jeweler in March 2008 for $3500. The watch came with the box, booklets, and the Rolex warranty indicating that it was sold new by the AD in 2001. My jeweler also included a 2 year warranty. At the time, some ADs here had the same watch for $5075, and others had already increased the price to $5750. I elected to buy pre-owned and have been pleased with my choice. After the 16710 model was discontinued, I watched as prices rose and speculation became rampant. The frenzy peaked when it was discovered that Rolex built some of the last 16710 models with the new 3186 caliber, as used in the 11671X GMT Master II with ceramic bezel. I still see some high prices for the "error dial" watches, even without a verified 3186 movement. I guess I can understand the fascination, it's like getting a Corvette C5 with the Corvette C6 engine. $5000 is very high for that watch.

How much would a SS/18k GMT II in mint condition would cost? I am in the market for one. I thought I would ask your opinion before buying.

Agreed. Why too much for that watch. You can find GMT's for sale on this site all day long. Even if you don't find a "coke" style, buy a Pepsi or black and just buy a new insert for it. My local jeweler sells me new inserts for my GMT II for $60 a piece. Needless to say, I have every bezel style for my watch. The nice thing is with the GMT is its versatility; you can swap new inserts with ease. Every time you insert new color, it changes the entire watch. Almost like getting a new one everytime!
You may get lucky when you go back for your deposit as the jeweler make work with you. I would be more likely to pay in the low $4,000's if the jeweler offered a warranty. I paid in the low $4,000s for my GMT, but it came with a 4 year warranty and lifetime cleaning and polishing. A little high for the watch, but Colorado Springs is not known for their Rolex AD's. Only one store in town, so no competition. Although you pay in the high $3,000s for a GMT on this site, I had a little more piece of mind buying from a jeweler with a warranty. Nothing against anyone's watches for sale on this site because there are some great sellers with great watches. Good luck! |

I can't believe people are still putting stock in all the bs that went around the net by sellers trying to make a extra buck on less informed buyers.

Boy, the RED/BLACK is a classic, but as mentioned that's a strong price all considered.
Inserts for modern are interchangable. I would find a clean example at a decent price and add inserts as you can. |

I agree, and would suggest talking to some of the guys on this site, like TempoKing, SteveHullond, DavidSW... they are the best and can get you excellent pricing.

Another vote to purchase from one of our great sellers here. You are definitely OVER-PAYING for that watch at $5k.

Heck, there's an '05 Pepsi over at The Time Keeper that looks to be in really good condition, with box and papers, for $3879. $5K is way too much.

First of all...IT"S NOT A COKE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
OK.. I feel better now........ The GMT II, when it first came out, only came in the red/black trim.. I suppose that was to differentiate it from the GMT Master, which could be had in Pepsi trim.. Since the early 90's though, you could get the GMT in either black-red/black- or red/blue...... It's just an insert, and they are all interchangeable since then.. As for the price, a P serial GMT should be around $4,000... maybe a bit more if it is mint...
