Icon20 Our growing family!

Hey all!

Our family of Rolexes has grown!

Some of you might recall the story I shared a couple of months ago regarding the acquisition of my rose gold Day Date. That story can be checked out here:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=86748

A few things have happened since that time. We, unfortunately, lost our mom back in May. Having lost our dad in 2000, this meant that we now had the estate to deal with - and some decisions brought about by the inheritance.

Mom 'n' Dad were a great couple - and different in a lot of ways. Dad was low key and conservative, mom was flashy and loved to be the centre of attention. What to do that would be a tip of the hat to each of them?

Well, paying down the mortgage and saving for college for our 15 month old seemed like a very "Dad" thing to do, so that was an easy call. Mom, on the other hand, loved trinkets, baubles, and jewelery - any guesses where this is going?

I had long been lusting for the platty YM and thought that would be the perfect next watch for my collection. For my wife (whom my mom adored - a rare quality amongst my mom's daughters-in-law) I knew that it should be something special. It wasn't easy to find but we finally got a nearly BNIB rose gold lady president that matched mine! (Oooh, matching watches, how nauseating! But they're DAMN gorgeous watches!)

This is where it gets better (and where that whole marriage thing paid some sweet dividends!)

One evening Shauna (the Wife) was looking for the aforementioned Lady President online and she calls me to the computer to ask me what I though of the piece that she was looking at. It was a two-toned Daytona with a slate dial. And it was spectacular! I never was much of a Daytona guy but if my wife wanted me to have one who was I to argue? And frankly, I love how the slate picks up the steel.

After hearing her gush about how nice she thought it was and how good it would look on me I 'reluctantly' agreed - so began the waiting game for the eBay auction to end.

Auction ended while we were at a friends 40th birthday party (we borrowed the daughters laptop to make sure we came out on top) and within days we had the Daytona delivered. The bezel wasn't quite what we expected (as you can see in the pix) but hats off to Beckertime for sending a replacement which was in great condition.

It was a big day when we got to the parcel depot. Three packages awaited and I felt like a kid at Christmas!

Thanks Mom 'n' Dad! For everything. We love you and we still miss you.

So, without further ado, I would like to share some pix with the group. Enjoy!

PS - any advice on macro photography is appreciated. It's nasty getting it right...

Something nice to remember them!!!!

I did something similar when my mom passed away 3 yrs ago. Brother and I had to renovate the house we grew up in (28yo house) to put up for sale. Figured rather do it ourselves then pay contractors to do it. So my dad paid me $10k and brother $18k (he worked on during the week and weekends)So after a year of working on it on weekends, finally sold it. Used $5k i got i put as down payment on my 2006 E500 4matic. So every time i do drive it, i know it was from working on the house. Then used some of the remaining to get my Rolex recently.

My Mom passed in May 2007 and I was deeply saddened. The next month, I came accross a TV show with a host selling watches and thus began a new hobby for me that brought me and has been bringing me much joy. No inheritence for me as it all went to her husband and that is fine. My mom was not a flashy person and expensive jewelry was not ehr thing. If she knew about my watch collecting and especially on purchasing Rolex watches, OH BOY, she would be giving me a hard time.

But for your circumstance, I think honoring your mother with getting watches for each other was the perfect thing. Your mom would be happy that you have a family heirloom that she contributed to.

Enjoy.

Thx - I think I took about 500 shots to get those few that worked.

Of special note is my use of our Crown Royal shot glass. A fine Canadian rye whiskey, produced only an hour north of our fair city.

I could use a shot right now!
