How long does DEMAGNETIZATION take?

My watch technician demagnetized my watch this morning. How long does it take for the process to fully work? Is there anything I can do to speed it along? Please let me know. Thank you!

It should be instantaneous after he runs it through the demagnetizer.

I haven't had to do a whole watch, but when I do small parts it is indeed instantaneous.

I had my Omega demagnetized - it took a couple of minutes.

Why is this needed? Do all timepieces require this eventually or is there an event that prompts the need to demagnetize a watch? Part of a normal service? Thanks.

Yeah, it took a few seconds for the tech to perform the service, but it still isn't working properly. He said that if it needs a service it will take 3 weeks because of the holidays. I really don't want to wait that long, but oh well, what can you do?

Thanks for all of your help!

My watch was magnetized by the self serve checkout in the library, apparently they contain strong magnets, loudspeakers are another source for it but in normal use if not near strong magnets there should be no problems!

Reading the many posts on TRF about some watches perhaps say 5- 10 seconds out per day.And they have been told that there watch is magnetised. Now the symtoms of a watch getting magnetised is it will run very very erratic.Generally speed up and not by a few seconds or come to a complete stop and refuse to re-start I have been wearing Rolex plus a few others for almost 30 years now,and before I retired was working in the steel industry. Now I used to work with and around very powerful electro magnets capable of lifting 20 plus tons and working with computes.Never had a problem with any watch getting magnetised. Now I work with high power radios that generate quite a strong magnetic field again never had any problems.IMHO magnetised is mostly a cop out term in most cases for a bit of regulation. If you look at the modern Rolex watch not much to get magnetised case S.steel very non-magnetic. And today most Swiss watches including Rolex are made from mostly anti-magnetic materials like nickel, brass or beryllium, bronze or Glucydur balance wheels so very anti-magnetic to start with. The older type Nivourax hairspring although not 100% anti-magnetic they had to pass a strict anti-magnetic test. And to temporally magnetise any watch it must come into contact with quite a strong magnetic field.

And today most Swiss watches including Rolex have to pass the Swiss standard for anti-magnetic watches.Which is to withstand a strong magnetic field of 4800 Amps per meter, and to keeps on running with a maximum deviation of 15- 30 seconds per day.Now this test I am 100% sure that 99% of all watch wearers would never subject or come into contact with such a strong magnetic field.
