I'm supposed to be shopping for my wife's B- Day present (SS Dj with Diamond dial), but its making me want another watch for me.

I'm torn between the Explorer I and a black face SS Turnograph DJ.

I like the explorer, just felt it to be a tad small, so I opted for the Milgauss in lieu of it.

It's a great looking watch, no question, but I think I'll go DJ or white Explorer II before I consider one.

Joe,
Maybe you are ahead of the curve.

Lately Rolex has jumped on the bigger is better band wagon and thrown a bunch of funky colored/designed dials, gaudy lightning bolt hands, BLINGY polished bracelets and obvious jewelry bezels at us.

So now you look at the Exp1 and see everything that made a Rolex a classic for so many years.
Best,
Mike

Add me to the Explorer fan base. I don't know if it is because it is just such a simple and classic design, or that I have been looking at one for about 45 years. As I posted in the vintage section, this was my dad's from new and I now wear it. New style bracelt, but the watch dates from about 1952-53.

Icon14 It's THE original James Bond watch

I used to really dislike this watch, a lot. I thought it was boring and bland, without any interesting features. However, one day, I woke up and loved it. Do I know why? Nope. Do I care? same answer. One day, it was the Explorer and nothing else. Everything that made the watch boring and uninteresting suddenly became exciting.

What does everyone think? Is this watch seeing a resurgence of interest? The economic outlook right now makes this stealth Rolex attractive because it's a bit harder to spot. However to us, it's everything that a classic Rolex should be.

So is the Explorer more popular now or am I just noticing it more because I had to have one? Maybe a bit of both?

Best regards from the the land of the 14270,

Joe
My inquiries have led me to believe that great thinkers have long appreciated the value of the Rolex Explorer!

I had one a few years ago, a D serial. It was actually a great watch. I traded it for a D serial Sub 14060M at the time because it was offered to me as an even trade and I couldn't pass it up. I liked the clean lines, the ruggedness, and the stealth of that watch. I wouldn't get another only because I have a Sub ND.

I like the watch, as its simplicity makes it very endearing. The only problem is its size, it needs to be 40mm, as it does look a bit feminine on a big wrist.

I wear an Explorer as my day to day watch and have done for 7 years.
It's reliability, quality and small size make it perfect. Plus it doesn't attract to much attention which is great when traveling in less than ideal surroundings.

It's a beautiful watch.
Classy, versatile & understated.

Just a tad small for me & I'd miss the date BUT that's purely a personal preference.

Gorgeous watch Robert. I love those hands. Nothing like an heirloom.
