AR Coating

Fellas I have read the ups and downs of anti reflective coatings.. But I must say any of these coatings (for those of you AR haters) are easily stripped. I saw a knock off platty Date-Just with a straight black Rolex Dial and white gold hands with simply a white gold crown at the 12 o'clock position. Of course this was a BS watch ala Movado Museum watch style but I must admit. It was f'n spectacular. Then I began to realize something. This Mandarin Chinese watch had an AR coating on the crystal which undoubtedley revealed a fatastic knock off watch face.... Point is I see a lot of "AR" haters here and I don't know why? I think my real Rolex Sub Face is 10000X better than that knock off crap but you cant see it with the in my opinion shitty that Rolex forget to spend $1US to multi coat the glass! Don't give me bullShi# that it scratches because lens coatings can be stripped ad reapplied. Or do you prefer to buy your next Nikon or Cannon with un-coated lenses? Hey my last Breitling was coated for use with nite vision systems in military aircraft so, again skip the BS about scratches. I love my Sub but for christ sake coat the damn gla!!

My GMT11c crystal reflects off everything. Pretty annoying to say the least for such a high grade crystal.

I like the fact that Rolex do not use AR coatings.When i buy a $5-10k watch i expect it to work perfectly for my Grandchildren,long after i have gone.....i would not want anything which was not durable,when paying so much money and i do not want to be re-applying anything.....Factory quality is always superior quality.

Because we know Rolex do not like AR coatings for several reasons,they therefore (i think) should make as many dials as possible with matte,low reflective dials to atleast minimise the amount of reflection

I JUST HAD A GREAT IDEA......why can't a laminated crystal be developed......with the AR coating in the middle????????...it would not eliminate reflection because its not on the surface....BUT it should reduce it dramatically...AND be totally scratch/wear resistant

It would be totally protected from scratches and deterioration...i know it would not be possible for "DEEP"dive watches,WHICH REQUIRE A THICK CRYSTAL.but for regular watches it should be possible.

Hey Rolex get it done....i just need 50% royalties for the idea...hahaha!!!!

Love the effect of the glare/reflection free coatings, but hate the one year-into the use scratches... Ignorant people laugh at my new cheap watch with mineral glass...

So unless an AR coating of DLC hardness is invented, I'm saying no thanks.

Granted, any exterior coating would look like crap in weeks - but I've seen watches which had AR inside the crystal - in the hermetically sealed dial environment - which had the desired effect of reducing the blinding reflection.

Maybe I'll make myself the test subject and get my next crystal AR'd on the inside and see how I like it.

Of course, the critical element is ensuring that there is no AR touching any part that acts to retain the WR or "glub glub glub"

My guess is that it will work just fine.

(Of course, then I won't be able to tease my cat with the little spot of reflected light from across the room)

My Seiko Kinetic will probably outlast all my mechanical watches...without service too!

I like AR coating on the inside of the crystal. AR outside is OK...i have it on my HV...no scratches yet...and it does seem to make the crystal disappear...but i know that there will be a day when i scratch it. Luckily, it is super easy to take the AR outside coating off...and i would still have the inside coating. Maybe Rolex wants to keep the reflections to attract attention (like pimping with chrome)...hell, that is why they invented the ceramic bezel!!

AR Coating is fine on the inside of the crystal. Makes a huge difference.

Outside coating gets scratched too easily and can be seen. No point of putting it on the outside of the crystal since it can get scratched and the crystal itself cannot

I have plenty of watches with an inside the crystal AR coating. No problems and look great. I don't believe that I would ever own a watch with an outer AR coating.

When i modified my SeaDweller, I had planned on having Jack@IWW AR coat my crystal on the inside. I forgot.

My Breitling has the coating on the outside and it holds up pretty well and if it does get scratched I can polish it off.

My Omega PO has double ar coating and looks great. I'd like to see someone try it on an DSSD because of its domed crystal.
