Hello! - new to the board

Hey guys,

I have been reading posts on this board for some time and have finally decided to register. The board is fascinating with excellent contributions by members.

I am a fairly young guy- 24, recently graduated. I am seriously considering buying by first Rolex watch. I love the submariner, gmt, and explorer, but this watch has caught my eye of late:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rolex-Thunderbir...QQcmdZViewItem

i am worried that it may not be authentic, so i wanted to hear opinions from board members. I have requested additional pics and info, so i will update as I receive them.

I look forward to your responses and the journey ahead!!!!

Welcome to TRF, Monte. Glad you decided to come out of the closet and join us.

Stick around and contribute to the fun here.

As for the TOG, I would be careful. The pics aren't that telling and as far as I can tell, the seller does not have a record of high end watch sales. Everything he's sold has been nickel - dime garbage. How come all of a sudden he's selling a $2700 watch.

Remember the Golden Rule of eBay buying: Buy the seller - not the watch.

Welcome to the board. When looking to purchase an expensive watch just make sure you are very comfortable with what you are buying. I am 26 myself and learned that lesson the hard way. Just remember, if it seems too good to be true it probably is.

Enjoy the experience, buy it face to face from a reputable source. Some ADs have second hand watches, which is a lot better as at least you can confront them if a problem arises.

Hi Monte,

A big welcome to TRF. As the others have already advised, I'd be careful around such deals. Spend a little extra and go to an Authorised Rolex Dealer for 100% peace of mind.

Cheers - JJ

Welcome, I just got here myself.

I've had very good experiences buying from Ebay, but I've seen my share of shady deals. If you want, buy through paypal AND use a credit card that offers buyer protection... save $$$ and be 100% confident in your purchase.

Hi and welcome to TRF

My thoughts on buying an expensive watch on ebay

It is like buying something at a garage sale...even worse you are buying a picture until it show up at your door.....

But thats just me.....would never do it......IMHO

I have to agree 100%.The $ stakes are just too high on Rolex with so many good fakes around.

I have absolutely no time for fakes or the people who actually wear them ....

Welcome to TRF! I too am flirting with the idea of purchasing a watch off of ebay, but I would never buy from a seller who doesn't have a history of selling luxury watches. Be careful!

Welcome to the board. I too have found it a great place.

I believe there is a Rolex buying rule to live by; "Don't buy a Rolex over the internet from someone whose main buisness is selling socks."

I can't remember where I heard that............oh, wait, I just made it up. This may well be a 100% legit auction........but it isn't that spectacular a watch or a price. Hang in there and consider Rolex as well as some other fine automatic watches from Omega, Baume & Mercier, etc.

Save your $$ until you can buy from an Authorized Dealer. Take a look at the Explorer I, you are within $1500 of a new one from an AD.

No, the watch was not a fake however, the pictures were not the watch that I received. The watch was beat up when it arrived at my door. Whenever buying your first Rolex just remember that when buying one in good condition, boxes papers ect. ect. it will not come at a "good" price. You'll end up paying what it is worth in most cases.
