Hey folks,

The 1520 in my 5500 Explorer is running about 15-20 sec slow a day. This is regular and consistant. It's fine in every other way and looks like new so simple regulation rather than a service is the way to go i think.

I would not attempt to regulate any of the free-sprung balance movements with the microstella but as this is not then i would like to have a go.

Does anyone have any links to a guide for regulating the 1520? Or can give advice based on experience?

I think that one must first look at why it may be running slow...even if it is consistent as running slow is a symptom sometimes, and not a condition..

If it's been a few years since a service, or the watch is used in a harsh environment, then lack of oil (or build-up of grit) at the pivots, worn pallet jewels, or lack of grease under where the lever pallet slides all lead to a watch that is working harder and beginning to slow down; just regulating is not the right fix..

If the watch has seen a regular service over it's life, and it has been knocked recently, or it's always been off by a similar amount, then a regulation may be all it needs...

Now... if you just want to play; I'm all for that too.............

I understand that service may be due. I'd like to have a go at regulating first though. If unsuccessful then it will be off to my watchmaker for a service for sure. I'm not going to be overly anal about it and want it running +/-2 sec a day. It's the running slow that i don't like. If I could get it anything upto say 10-15 sec a day fast then i'd be cool with that.

So..........i think i'd like to play

Move the regulator away from where the hairspring is studded or looking at this picture the bar on the right away from the other bar about a 1/10 of a millimeter to start. Then set to a known good time source and wear for a day or two. Without a timing machine it's a guessing game and may take a week or so to get it where you want it. Rik

Ok, thanks guys. I've just moved the right hand post a fraction of a mm and set the watch to an atomic source. Will check it again this time tomorrow......

-6 sec over 24 hours now. Have nudged it a fraction more....now watch it jump to +10 or something

The screw is for the hairspring stud do not loosen or it will fall out .The regulator on this model has no lock stop mechanism. Rikki

Thanks for the help guys. Success. Now running +/-1 second per 24 hours. It gains 1-2 while on my wrist and then drops them off again while sitting crown up overnight. Very pleased.

And all that fantastic accuracy without the aid of a parachrome hairspring just love those 15XX series movements.
