Canadian members. Question on duties
How much duties and taxes are assessed on rolex watches purchased from the US?

5% of the assessed value (sales invoice or declaration of value), plus your province's PST & GST, plus a $5 fee.
If shipped by UPS or FedEx they also add an exorbitant "brokerage fee". I purchase U.S. only when the seller will ship USPS.

In my experience swiss watches have a 5% duty. You are also charged for the GST and PST. Canada Post charges a $5.00 processing fee. If you use a courier service such as UPS you will be charged a brokerage fee as well. This would be about $80.00 on a declared value between $1600.00-$5000.00. The brokerage fee is included in their more expensive shipping options. USPS/Canada Post is the cheapest for brokerage fees - the courier companies can be quite expensive. It is best to check the courier companies website before using them for shipping. Compare shipping options and search their sites for "brokerage fees."

Thanks for the reply. This just making purchases accross the border quite pricey. The lower cost of rolex watches in the US will be offset by the cost of shipping and duties I guess.

Are you looking for new or used? Another member posted that he was offered a 20% discount on a sub at a Toronto AD. The price seemed to be in line with a US discount price.

USPS is generally the way to go, except, items can languish for quite some time in the CBSA warehouse if it comes by mail. FedEx et al do their own brokerage which speeds up the process significantly however as stated the fees can be quite high.

Is the duty the same on used watches purchased in the US and shipped to Canada?
Is it still 5% duty plus GST and PST?
I am planning on buying a used Rolex on EBay and shipping it to Canada. Thanks! |

RDV in downtown Toronto offered me 20% off a sub as soon as I walked in the door . On my second visit they bumped it to 22% so I pulled the trigger on the sub LV. Did my homework and came to the conclusion that buying new from an AD from down south has no benefits at all.

Thus guaranteeing it can never be insured here because Canadian insurance companies want proof that the product was "legally obtained", which includes paying any applicable taxes and duty.
