01 sub running +5 sec a day ? AD Time ?

Hello, I am new to the forum and I never really worried about the accuracy of my TT sub. i did purchase it new in 01. Should i take it in for adjustment at my local AD? i don't think its ready for a trip to rolex as i probably havent worn it but maybe 3 week a year until the past month now that i wear it full time. It is running +5 a day for a week now as I checked it with USTIME.com. When my AD opens the case does it let in moisture , even ambient moisture or dust? What all is involved with regulation at the AD? Thanks in advance. chucker

I have wound the spring a full 40 to 50 turns. And just like my worn out Tag... i never, never take it off except to clean soap scum. and i am a diver, so it has to be water tight if the AD opens it.

You could try taking your watch off at night and in certain resting positions might loose a few seconds when off your wrist.Crown down could make it gain a second or two, crown up could make it lose a second or two.Try some experimentation of your own, but for a couple of seconds IMO leave it alone as long as its inside the COSC standards -4 to +7 over 24 hours.Check your watch over a week with the same time source after the week has gone, then see how much gained or lost. But don't forget this since a normal day has 86,400 seconds, even a watch that runs five minutes fast, or slow each day has an accuracy of over 99.6 percent!. A Rolex or any mechanical watch that gains or loses about nine seconds a day or about a minute a week has a breathtaking precision of over 99.99 per cent. This is very high precision, given the fact that the movement is constantly affected by the earth's gravity, metal expansion and contraction, temperature variations, subtle changes in lubrication and friction, shocks, and so on,just wear and enjoy your watch. Your watch is still a very very consistently accurate mechanical watch. As for regulation its a very simple process and a AD with in-house watchmaker. It would take around 30 mins to adjust and re-pressure test put a new case seal in your watch. If you are going to use watch quite regularly for diving recommend a pressure test every one or two years as a minium. But IMO as you have not used your watch much, till recently. Leave it alone until you decide on the next service +5 secs is still inside the COSC standards

This is great information and answered a question that I had, thanks.

I started posting on this forum this past November. I don't usually have a lot to say which is why I've only got 30 or so posts after almost 2 months.

The knowledge that I get from just reading other people's posts though is fabulous. I love when I come across tidbits like this.

Thanks again for the info Padi.

Hey Padi since you are good with numbers can you make up a little spreadsheet showing how accurate the watch is based on seconds lost or gained per day for up to, say 20 seconds? 1 second may be 99.999875436, 2 seconds is 99.45373534, and so on....

Hello Chucker and welcome to TRF. It's now 07 so I think your watch will be in need of a quick service. I did mine after seven years but usually it should be done every five years or so, just to have the oils changed and new seals fitted.

Hi Chucker...

How was this watch stored the 5 years you've owned it (i.e. on a winder, cool dry place)?

If it's to see regular service as a dive watch I'd have the seals looked into, It's a good idea to have dive watches inspected before each season...

Welcome...

thanks for the replies..

However, i still have a few questions about an AD adjusting it.

1. They must open the case , does this cause any long term harm? dust, moisture, etc.

2. How do they pressure test ?

i know its only + 5 seconds a day, however he'll probably do this for free as i just dumped a wad on mamas christmas and an upgraded dial for her datejust.

thanks chuck

There will be know harm done to your watch by opening the case.Pressure testing is sometimes done in a small wet or dry chamber, again no harm can be done to your watch. But like I said before IMHO leave it, until you get watch serviced. If watchmaker sets your watch bang on with his timing machine, don't necessarily mean it will run bang on your wrist. If your watch is running at + 5 secs constantly its a extremely accurate watch. The test in its self, your watch is sealed into an artificial pressure chamber - ranging from . 5 Bar to what ever the watch is rated at. Sometimes the test determines that your watch is not waterproof. Then the leak testing equipment takes over, your watch is pumped full of pure clean air/or air/gas mixture, then put into small amount of water in sealed chamber. Then the bubbles escape from the air inside of the watch, which gives away the location of the watch leak, it might be in the crown, the crystal, or the back. But don't worry, the testing cannot damage your watch in any way.

I wonder how they pressure test an SD, since the reversed pressure will vent out of the He valve?
