picking up a Fat Lady

Last week, I visited my watchmaker. We talked for awhile and later he reached into a drawer and pulled out a 16760 GMT2 to show me. I consider the 16760 to be a difficult to find reference and I have only seen one once previously at the KY Vintage Rolex GTG last October.
This "Fat Lady" is is remarkable condition overall and the original dial and hands are intact and have a nice creme patina The case has never been polished and the green hologram was never removed. The serial # 9360XXX dates this watch to c. 1986. Included was the original bracelet # 78360 with 501 end pieces and a date code of K2 (February 1986).
I have been wearing this watch for 3-4 days and it is keeping excellent time.
I believe I am the second owner and that this watch was only worn by the original owner on a few "special occasions".
Below is an attempt to show the difference in the case thickness and crowns guard size of the 16760 compared to a 16710 D series.
I am delighted to add this "Fat Lady" to my collection. She seems right at home with my other GMTs.

When lifting use your legs not your back.
That's a beauty, Mark. The Fat Lady is a great reference.

Very nice! Welcome to the "Fat lady club"!

Mine have had it's original dial and hands, somewhat sadly, replaced by Rolex back in 2003, but instead she looks like new.

But LOVE the patina on yours!

That is so beautiful. Wear it in good health and congratulations.

I have had a Coke GMT with Jubilee bracelet on layaway since August last year. I have had one huge problem after another, but I am paying it down a bit each month. I will eventually get it home. I cant wait!

This makes me want it that much more!

Im not sure if mine is a Fat Lady or not. Its a 1986 year of production, and has a 96xxx serial from what I recall. Would that make it a Fat Lady GMT? Anyone know for sure? Im curious here.

Check the model number. Take off the bracelet, if it's a model 16760, then you have a Fatty.

Hey Dean, the case is thicker, hence the nickname.

Congratulations, Mark, on your find. Sounds like a well cared for watch for it's vintage. Looks great, too! Nice comparison showing the thicker case compared with the newer 16710.

Dean the name was given by a noted German collector because of the thicker case and crown guards of the 16760 vs. the 16710.

Congrats! I'm also the proud owner of a 16760, my first Rolex bought new in March 1987. Of course, at the time I had no idea what reference it was or whether it would have any collectible value - I simply bought it because I liked the look and styling!

I really want a GMT, but I want it in Pepsi. I was wondering if I get one and put a Pepsi bezel on it will it be considered a frankenwatch? The Fat Lady only came in black and red, right?
