Rolex Maint. Questions

I've heard a lot of different things from friends, family, AD's, etc. and I figured I would come here for the real answers!

- You should let your watch run down once every 6-8 months to "rest"?

- How often should you send your watch to Rolex for a service?

and any other general maint. tips and advice you might have for a newbee...

check out the sticky threads on the watchtech forum - there is already much info on this topic.

generally, if you wear your watch everyday, then every 5-7 years.

but if you are wearing it less (as a weekend warrior), then about every ten years will do. also, it depends if you have the higher beat movements.

- I don't believe that there is any reason to ever let your watch run down for it to "rest". It's a machine and never gets tired nor can it "renew" itself with some time-off...cross that one off your list.

- Rolex recommends "about every 5 years depending on wearing habits"; so this could mean that a well cared for watch could go for quite a bit longer..

One tip that used to be neglected is a periodic washing with a grease cutting liquid soap and water...this will get the grit and particles out from between the mating surfaces and your bracelet will last for many years longer..

Exactly--they can even go 7 years between service. My AD says if it is working fine --wait and save the money. I think every 5 is a bit too much IMHO. But--to each his own.

Any precision machine needs to be fine tuned periodically to keep it in top running condition.

As I said--to each his own--And yes they do need to be fine tuned--but if they are in perfect running condition there is no reason to waste the money--7 years is fine for most--5 for others.

It's just like Jiffy Lube saying you need to change your oil every 3000 miles but then the dealer says every 3750, then you read the Honda manual and it says in non-city driving you're ok up to 10,000 miles.

Who knows.

Just do what you feel is right.

I vote for every 7 years.

I usually let mine run till they stop. Then they get serviced. 5-7 years is a pretty good range, and by then, a light polishing can really bring back some sparkle.

However, if you see water or moisture inside the watch-- run, don't walk, to a watch guy who can replace the seals, etc. Because the parts inside a watch are so small and light, corrosion can do serious damage.

I took my DJ in for a service last weekend.

I wore it EVERY day, until I got my GMTIIC last year, and it hasn't been serviced for 16 years!

It was running perfectly when I stopped wearing it about 11 months ago and it started running again, shortly after I took it out it's box last weekend, without winding it manually.

Obviously it will be crying out for a good overhaul, but surely this is testament to the quality of the timepieces we all love so much!

I'll let you all know the outcome.

A friend of my wife's bought a new ladies Date-Just in 1987. She has never taken it off her wrist. To this day she has never had any problems with it either. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
