Icon20 Submariner date with new serial no

I have heard from from my local Rolex AD that there are very few sub dates made with the new random serial no, so it is probably the trasitional model with very few being made
and then you will get the sub with ceramic by end of July, do you think it is true.

Well, I wouldn't call it a transitional model per se, but it may get a bit more interest in the future. It's still exactly the same watch as M or V serials. As for the new SS Sub, the first batch could arrive any time between July and September

Only people from this forum will realize that difference. Most people don't know a V from a Z from a P.

It is true, they are out. I have one and they will be the last serial sequence to be produced, but it's just another differnet serial number of millions of 16610's produced.

Have to agree and the only difference between the millions of other 16610s since 1988/9.Is now a SEL bracelet a LEC and a few minor fonts, and a different case date stamp and thats it.And in my experience never seen any Rolex more collectible just because of a case date stamp. And transitional means like a change from acrylic to sapphire crystal and a change from the 316l to the 904l S.steel and not a case date stamp or serial.

I think that the new serial numbers are interesting... I would have to agree with the AD that there are going to be fewer of them made............. but, that's hardly a secret..

However, there is no evidence that they will be worth more in the future than any other serial number... There has never been a case where a serial number has been a factor to determine value...

It is an interesting situation. The M, V and now random serial numbers for this year do establish some reference points in time for various models. Five years from now, for example, a random serial number watch could be a 2010 or a 2015 model, if the model hasn't changed. Features will continue to change, as they have in the past, but there will be no specifying by serial number range like some people were able to do with the 3135/3136 movements.

Is that really the case? will we not be able to tell the year on the new serial numbers?

From the pictures I've seen and what I've read it appears to be a completely random, 8 position, combination of numbers and letters.

Tools, quick question (or anyone else).....
Do you not think that Rolex will do away with the single letter followed by numbers and replace it with the random number letter combo we are seeing more of? What do you mean that there will be fewer of them made?

Not questioning you because I think you are wrong.....just trying to educate myself, thanks in advance.

I'll jump in and answer this one - Rolex have sent a circular to ADs in the UK stating that all models will be getting the new style serials, and will be appearing on models other than the 16610 within the next few months

Yes, and they're stopping putting the serial number on the exterior of the case at 6 o'clock too

I'm not sure about your question... I think that they have already done away with the single letter followed by numbers and once all of those that are in the shipping/warehouse pipeline are gone, that will be it for them... For the 16610, I say that there will be fewer of those made with randoms because they have already been made for 20 years, and so the randoms will only last a year or two with the discontinuation of the model...

As far as dating the new randoms.......... I would like to get my hands on one and inspect it inside and out......... we do not yet know if they will stamp the case inside with a date stamp like they did in the 50's through the 70's or not...

We have a couple of years to study them because everybody knows that any randoms will be 2010/2011 models.......

I'm confused. I didn't think there was any mention of the 14060(M).

It's not transitional and not any reason to buy. The only good reason to buy is because you love the watch.

Most of my comments about the Sub Date 16610 are about it's discontinuation.. The Sub 14060M is still in production and will be for a few years, but it likely will get new random serial numbers too.......

I looked at a random serial number 16610 at an AD last week. They received it about 10 days ago. I suspect it is one of the very last 16610s to be delivered to a USA AD.

Take a good photograph of one and pm it to me so I can photoshop out critical information, but still use it in the Reference Library.......

This MAY affect resale value in a few years due to the limited production.

Has anyone checked to see if these are fitted with the "new" movements?

Open them up please.
