Got my GMT II last December. It runs -1 to -1/2 sec per day.

I've worn it everyday so no need to wind it. With a heavy work schedule this week I wore my Hammy beater and decided to hand wind the GMT II to keep it going.
Here's the question: when hand winding the GMT II you can hear a knocking noise when first turning clockwise. Feels like the movement is loose when winding but I see no signs it's loose [i.e. moving hands]. After winding clockwise there is no clicking noise turning the stem back counter clockwise. When the crown is screwed down it's as quiet as can be. My DJ does'nt do this. Could this be common to the GMT II movement?

I can't seem to get this knocking sound from any of my watches... the winding turn does have little clicks in it as you're turning clockwise and moves backwards without a sound or resistance.

Exactly which of the above does your DJ not do?

My DJ, when the crown is unscrewed, clicks when turned clockwise to wind the movement and clicks when turned counter clockwise [although quieter]. This is consistant with every watch I've ever owned.

The GMT II, when the crown is unscrewed, feels and sounds like a "clonk" everytime it's first turned clockwise to release the slack, then the normal clicking sound heard when winding. When turned counter clockwise there's no resistance, noise, or clicks of any kind.

As I said, it's running great and when the the crown is screwed down, everthing seems normal. Not sure if it's normal for the GMT II movement or if I should visit my watchmaker.

I too get one clonk noise, But I guess its just from the crown not being fully pulled out

Now I feel busted for not paying attention. Yes after first unscrewing the crown, there's a clonk that happens just before turning it clockwise to wind... (exactly as described by Sol) this is apparent in my GMTs as well as Explorer IIs (same movement). None of them have any resistance or clicks on the counter wind, though. I don't have a DJ to check to see if this is different or not.

It's so rare for me to handwind the GMT II that I was'nt sure. Seems like I'd have noticed this when I first got it.
