Just look at any scratches and dings as acts of liberation. Its a good thing.
Once the first couple are there, you are free to wear your watch wherever
and for doing whatever.

When I was 20 living in Idaho, I bought a new pickup truck. The day after ibought it, my friends were all going out "4-digging" as we liked to call it. My roomate, offered to let me ride with him since my truck was brand new.

I asked him, "Why do you think I bought it?" I then proceeded to have an awesome day running in some mud flats, etc. The fun I had far outshone the fact that I ripped out the driver's side front and rear brake lines and jerked the rear bumper off.

Wait til you lose the first second...

Human nature...a Rolex is, objectively, a really expensive watch. I feel the same way when my new car gets its first "ding." I imagine we would also feel worse when we spill some food on a nice silk suit or tie, versus getting the same food spill on a cotton sweatshirt...

When I was 18 I got my first car and one month later a deer ran into the side of it smashing the pass side door and rear quarter panel. Fixed it, then month later a girl I worked with ran into the other side of the car damaging the door. Fixed it, then two months later I backed into a Horse Hitching Post. Fixed it, since then I don't sweat it because sometimes it is just meant to happen.

By the way the girl that ran into my car did help me get over her running into my car........

The 1st 'cut' always hurts. I was very disappointed the 1st time it happened to me with the GMTIIc. To make matters worse, every time I wear the watch, that's the 1st thing I look for.
Oh well. It is what it is.

I'm still holding my breath for the first really noticeable scratch. I might start the habit of simply not inspecting it as closely as I usually do. Easier said than done, of course!

Its just metal, it can be buffed and polished and look like new. I'm more scared of stretching the gold on Jubile bracelet than I am scratching a saphire crystal.

Haha paranoid people out here...scratches are gonna happen. Think of it this way, in 30 years would you rather have a watch that you rarely wore and therefore is almost NOS or one with scratches? Think how paranoid you'll be when that watch is worth 2 or 3 times what it's worth now, if it's perfect then you'll be scared S**tless to even take it outta the safe.
I say wear it and don't worry so much...if it's still flawless in 30 years I can guarantee that you didn't enjoy it and anyone allowing themselves to live that way is sure missing out on life. Maybe I'll invent some sort of case to put your Rolex in while you wear it...even have a Rolex crown on the top so people will know what you've got. hell maybe I can even put a dial on the case so you'll know what time it is without having to open it!

If scratches on a S/S watch hurt, then just imagine what it feels like to scratch a full gold or even platinum watch...arrgh!

My philosophy is this...

Only I can put scratches on my watch...those are okay...as long as they aren't big ones.

If someone else made the scratch (like your watch tech)...then I'd be beyond pissed and would expect a free polishing.

I'd take it back and have them remove the scratch...but that's just me.

I hear you buddy! I was stupid enough to use a needle to press the adjustable pin on the clasp of my Expy 2 and it ended up with a couple of small scratches. Same story, my girlfriend told me it was nothing and all but I new it was there and I was very much obsessed by it. Finally, I ended up popping into the RSC and asked them to polish the affected area. At first they told me they would need to do the whole bracelet and that it would take a week or so... I stood there in front of the receptionists and practically got on my knees and begged her to ask the watchmaker if he could do me a favor and quickly polish the small scratches and much to my delight the watchmaker agreed to polish it while I waited. What a relief that was! I now have a few more scratches but these happened "naturally".

Get some cape cod cloths...they are great for minor scratches.

When you have more expansive watches, you wont feel that anymore

I can't relate. My 14060 after 3 years is loaded with scratches, dings, pits (and I don't abuse it). Scratches are inevitable. It means you are wearing it. With respect to the car analogy, I also have tons of respect for those guys who race vintage Ferraris, and occasionally slam them into the tire wall. More power to them...That's what they are for.

It was said that scratches give the watch character, not that they build character in the owner. And it's certainly true.

It's okay for things to acquire patina as they are used. If minor scuffs are left alone, watches grow old gracefully.

If excessively polished, they look like somebody after too many face-lifts.

For some one who didn't even like their Daytona at first you seem pretty upset by a scratch lol

I promise they will get easier with time! I've come to like the marks on my watches!
