I guess you need a lot of nickles when you buy one.

Yes. Lots. Over 10% for the 316 alloy watches, about 25% for 904.

I assume the stainless parts are the same as their SS counterparts.

If you've got a nickel allergy, don't mess around - it only gets worse. Perfect excuse for you to pick up a yellow-gold or platinum Day-Date.

I believe all stainless steel has some quantity of nickle content, but varies by the grade of stainless.

Let me rephrase: do the DJ contain the 10% or 25% alloy?
I have sensitive skin; and as an MD i freqeuntly have to wash my hands. Over the years I have developed a serious allergy to all glycerin containing products. I'm a bit concerned I might become sensitive to nickel.

I'm not certain about the new ones, but the older Datejusts were I believe 316.

I'm not an allergist/metallurgist, so I'm not sure if the higher-Ni-content 904 alloy is actually worse than 316 for people with nickel allergies. I would assume what matters is how freely a particular alloy gives up its nickel. Who knows, maybe 904 is better on that score.

In all seriousness, if I had any concern about this and I was already looking at two-tones, I'd consider a gold Day-Date instead.

316 has 10-14% nickel and 904l has 23-28% nickel.

A Bund strap might be somewhat more budget friendly than a solid gold watch, not that there's anything wrong with solid gold watches.

If you truly want to wear the watch there is a common fix in the jewelry trade. You can find a watchmaker/jeweler to help you out.

I do this often with wedding rings when one or another is allergic to nickel. You can have the watch case, caseback, and bracelet treated in a Rhodium, or Palladium electroplating. This will put a micro layer of bright white metal on the steel. They would put it together, and only you would know.

Some people put a thin layer of nail polish on the inside of the jewelry, but that's not a good idea on a watch.

I can't imagine any electroplating holding up long-term on a watch, especially the bracelet, and especially where the links rub together. But perhaps even with scratches and sections worn through it's still "good enough" to prevent a reaction.

It would be a thin plating, but enough to prevent contact on the inner portions. It couldn't hurt to try.

Same story with my wife. I even told the Rolex Store at the Wynn, "If she has an allergic reaction to the metal in the band, I am going to have to take it back." Thankfully, she never had any allergic reaction. She has to watch out for all earrings and belt buckles too.

Rolex was fine though.

Most white gold alloys contain nickel. I don't know what Rolex uses.
