Day Date President - New vs Preowned?
I am considering my second Rolex purchase - my first is a preowned datejust bought 15 yrs ago.
I have had my heart set on a YG President but was quoted nearly 29k (Can $) and am wondering what your suggestions are with exploring the preowned market instead? Thanks in advance. |

If you can afford new and plan to keep it, do it and you'll have a family heirloom that you can pass on to your kid so he can sell it. .
Seriously, you can buy a mint condition gold president for about half price of new. I'm sure you didn't get into the position of being able to afford a $25k watch by being foolish with your money so why not apply that same mentality here? Look in the FS forum, there's a guy there trying to sell a ROSE GOLD presidential for $11,500... Hello? Padi Edit Even though your statement had a smiley at end, it was not in good taste so removed the last part.

well i bought a new day date as it was a special gift for my dad... however a preowned good condition watch would look like new once you get it serviced and polished...

I must agree that Pre-Owned is a smart choice on a DD.

Depending how old of one you want to buy, the deals are great out there. For late models, less than half the price of new. If you want to dip into the 60's or the 70's, you can find nice ones as low as in the 5's.
Good hunting!!!!! |

New is a no no with gold, they are a very bad investment. I paid £9500 for my pre-loved six month old DD, the new retail is close to £17000!!!! Go pre-owned all the way

I would go with a preowned. With box and papers you might find something around $11-13K

Thanks very much guys. You have confirmed my suspisions. Back in my mid 20's when I made this promise to myself I had a number of around 10k in my mind - clearly this was a preloved number. :)
Any links to follow the preowned market, perhaps even a dealer locater in say Winnipeg, MB? Thanks again! |

Most of the time, I'm not a fan of buying secondhand but considering how high the initial depreciation is for the Day-Date, I'd be willing to make an exception in this case!

I personally think when it comes to Gold watches - especially heirloom pieces - there is only 1 brand. Patek Philippe.

Pre-loved all the way, should be more than 50% off retail.

The plunge in value these watches take makes it hard to justify buying new. Almost a sucker trade IMO.

If you look hard enough you will find new DDll's for roughly 18k from solid grey dealers! Don't waste the money at an AD!!
