First of all, your nephew has excellent taste! The Explorer II is an underrated Rolex.
There are quite a few threads just a short "search" away on this board extolling the virtues and demerits of the Explorer II... Some quick ones: * two timezone function (like GMT II) * 40 mm with date function (to help you distinguish it from the Explorer) * solid steel bezel more robust than rotating one (like on the Sub or GMT II) for active outdoor lifestyle * two dial color choices, with ability to switch relatively cheaply between the two * less overtly "Rolex", which, to some, like me, is a positive * the white dial, in particular, is dress up/dress down, and unique among the Rolex sports models * not as much history/cache as the Submariner, GMT or Explorer, if that's important * likely to be updated next year (updated bracelet and clasp, wider lugs, orange second timezone hand); see threads discussing the relative merits of these changes * bigger discounts than Subs or GMT IIs, if price is a factor See the two-year old and still-going-strong "enigma" thread for lots of pictures and many comments on this model. I, for one, am a HUGE fan: |
