I am not a fan of the new maxi models. I'll be sticking with my trusty classic Sub 16610 Y serial with lug holes.

x1000

Its gutting to see 57 years of history besmirched in this fashion. I feel as if the Rolex design team has personally spat in my face. I really wanted to like the new model but i just cant, its bloody awful and looks amateurish.

wow.. a lot of hate for the new sub.... even though i have my LV (and I love it), i still think the new sub is a must have item in the future..... despite the higher price that i must pay, it is a really fine watch and it still contains it "classic" taste in it... there is not much change from the current style and the ceramic one, unlike GMT ... i like all :)

It seems that Rolex instead of being a leader is now a follower and the new Sub is just a reaction to other watches being bigger (Panerai etc) and it being the current fashion trend, but fashion today is gone tomorrow.

I love the whole of the old Line of Subs and this just looks wrong and out of proportion to me

Two points come to mind... 1) the Sub is still 40mm diameter, and 2) Panerai have been 'big' since the 1930s. In fact the vast majority of Panerai models sold now are in the 40 - 44 mm size range. I am not sure why people single out Panerai as being especially large or fashionable. Their case designs go back to the 30s/40s/50s, and of course they worked in collaboration with Rolex in the late 30s.

Cheers

I appreciate Panerai have always been big but it seems the trend for bigger watches which Rolex are going down, and it seems rather than going their way they are following the fashion, just my opinion.

bletch, imho I think Rolex might have been better off increasing the diameter of the Sub but keeping the 'classic' proportions. I don't envy the design team who are tasked with updating a design classic (any product) - do they keep it the same and be accused of being old fashioned or too conservative? Or do they take bold steps and risk alienating the existing customer base? I think what Rolex did was cleverly compromise by retaining the 40mm diameter and playing with the relative proportions. Compromised design is rarely successful, but 'Rolex Submariner' has a special pull all of its own. Technically, I think the new bracelet and clasp are long overdue and very welcome.

Cheers

I think this is a tempest in a teacup. There is a supercase sub (TT model) or two at a local dealer, and at actual size (not super blown up pictures on the web) it doesn't look ALL that much different than the current model, to my eyes anyway.

Gulp!
I think I like it... I have tried on the larger case in the Two Tone and I love the bigger look on my larger wrist!
I can't see trading my Sub for the new one but ... I think the "updated" classic would be great for a first timer that is over 6' with larger proportions.

I also know that if I got the new Sub, I would constantly compare the size to the YM and Daytona and it would drive me nuts!

For now, I will have a secret crush, but I can't wait to try it on and see if it "sings".

I'm confused. I see a strong preponderance of complaints about the new case.

People are writing in about how Rolex made the case too 'chunky', the lugs are too big for the bracelet, it's out of proportion, etc., yet at the same time so many people here praise the Deep Sea up, down and across. Everything folks are complaining about in the Ceramic Sub is actually doubled on the Deep Sea, but that one they love. I don't get it.

I can only hope that people continue to hate the new look on the Sub when it hits the dealers, so I can get one at a generous discount!

Good post. I often think that all the blown up pics we see on watch forums serve to exaggerate what are really very small differences. Yesterday I was wittering on about the difference in case heights between the GMT IIC and Sub C being ½ mm (actually 0.6 mm) The flip side of this is that we tragic WIS types stare at our watches endlessly and note every nuance of this relatively small yet oh so personal device...

Cheers

In a way Have to agree. I saw a Blue White Gold Sub-Date C at the AD's. Lugs were bigger compared to the SS Z Sub-Date I was wearing. Same 40mm though. With the Bigger lugs, IMHO It makes it look more Boxy, If thats the right terminoligy. Now as for my DS. The lugs looks proportiate to the case.

It surprises me how offensive some people can be about a watch that they've not yet seen in the flesh, nor have they any intention of buying.

Personal preferences aside, Rolex updated the Submariner design probably because their sales numbers and fashion trends dictated it. They may have noticed a drop in sales due to the competition's diver watches, which are generally larger all around. I'm sure they'll have no problems selling the new Sub in droves when it's released.

Sometimes changes(like to the SS Sub) are hard to deal with and will take some time to get used to. Life is about possibilities and choices and decisions are made accordingly. If you do not like the changes...no one is forcing you to buy it!!!

New sub > old sub. The new glidelock clasp blows the old cheap clasps out of the water. No contest. I would definitely buy this watch if it wasn't for the new explorer ii. The size isn't that much bigger and how could you not like the ceramic bezel. I can guarantee people will change their minds when this watch gets released. Just my .02 cents.
