Thinking of flipping

I bought my Date 3 years ago. It was always meant to go to my eldest son on my demise.
After much discussion with my wife we decided that it'd be unfair to give my youngest son my battered old work van.
So, i bought an Exp II to pass on to him.
Here they are.



Now, i'm seriously thinking of flipping the date for something a bit, well, more substantial.
You see i've always thought that the Date looks fine on my large wrist. I still do. However my eldest will probably grow to about 6' 4" when he's an adult (he's 5' 4" now and he's 12) and i'm worried he won't wear it.
Now, this isn't imminent by any means and i still love wearing the Date, but i'd like some input into which model i'd like.
Cost is a major factor. I could well get about £1500 for the Date so i could maybe find another £2500. That puts me in the Sub/Exp II black/GMT/Milly bracket.
So, come on people. What would you do and if you did which would it be?

Martin as you know mate I've been in a very similar situation.


Personally I'd go with the Black Explorer II of a similar age to your white one....

You'll get to keep by far the best part of the extra cash in your pocket that way too.


(OR sell the white Explorer II as well & upgrade both to newer or a GMTII & a Sub' if you 'feel the need' to flip?)

I think it'd be pretty great to give the boys the same watch but in different colors.

I'd go with a Sub. That way, the boys can trade every now and then and have a different watch.

OK, don't fire back to hard, but I am having a hard time passing down any 40mm watch to my boy. My boy will also be a big man when he grown up, and 40mm is considered mid size today, so what will it be like 20 years from now. I have a gut feeling that my girls will be better suited for my 40mm watches down the road, seriously, it is making me re-think my collection.

I was just at a local AD a few days ago and they lady behind the counter commented on my GMT II, I said thank you proudly then the continued to say she wear the same watch all the time. All my wife's friend wear watches in the 38-40 mm range and it looks perfect, and I think the bigger watch thing is here to stay. My friend at my local Rolex AD said they can't give away the women's sized Rolex watches, women are buying the 40mm watches these days. I was looking through the latest Omega catalog yesterday, and guess what, Cindy Crawford is wearing a PO, and it just looks perfect. Not sure if it was 42 or 45, either way, it was bigger than 40mm and it looked amazing on her wrist..

I recently picked up a 46mm watch, and my wife said it is the best looking watch I have ever owned or currently own. I have to be honest, it fits perfectly and does not look over sized at all, it fits perfectly.

Just my $.02, but if I pass down a 40mm watch, I have a feeling that my girls are going to be the ones that want it.

That whole bigger is better craze has to stop. And I'm sure it will at some point, just like 5 years ago people would only buy SUVs and now many people snark at someone driving a giant gas-guzzling Suburban of the new car lot (unless they have 8 ppl in the family and need to tow...).

40mm is a most excellent size for a professional tool watch. I've got a Deepsea but wearing that to a suit just looks stupid. I've tried a few times but it just looks tacky (even worse when I tried wearing a Panerai 243 I had for a while).

10-15 years from now we'll all be wearing phone/internet communication devices, using computers with flexible screens - all telling time as well. I have a very hard time thinking the bigger is better hysteria will continue in its current trajectory because then we will all be wearing 60mm watches (still with 30mm ETA movements inside!). I'll gladly be the voice of reason sporting my vintage Sub or Sea-Dweller.

Rant off, I'd get yourself/your son a 16600 Sea-Dweller now that you can still get them at a decent price/condition. That will make a nice switch with your Exp II for many years to come.

I would opt for a Sub (either date or ND) - lots of pre-owned examples around at the moment at good prices. A real classic that would compliment your Exp II

As i say, it isn't going to happen within the next year so i've plenty of time to think about it. I may even take him to an AD so he can choose for himself, although knowing my luck he'll pick a Daytona.

Whatever you decide, respectfully, to make it extra special why don't you look for something from your lad's birth-year, shouldn't be too hard at the moment

I understand completely! As far as what to get im not sure...i like the black dial expII idea. My sons will get my watches in the order of acquisiton..oldest gets the LV,middle gets the expII,and youngest gets the Pam. My middle son is the only one that is interested in watches so im not sure the other 2 boys will care really,but they will hopefully know how important they were to me and remind them of their father!!
Im only 38 as of tomorrow so they better have to wait awhile!!

I hate to say it, but when your gone it will be far, far more than just a watch.....he won't realise that yet....hope it's a long way off though
