Rolex DeepSea/SeaDweller Pricing

Hey All,

Does anyone think that Rolex might have "Jumped the Shark" when it comes to the Rolex Sea Dweller. I wonder who is head of the think tank at Rolex.
I have owned 3 different Sea Dwellers over the years. Lets take a quick look at the price structure of the Sea Dweller From Sept 2006 it was $ 4,700, then by Oct 08 jumped to $ 6,400. They didn't even upgrade the watch. Thats quite a bump in a 2 year span, then of course, Rolex decided to stop making the watch. So, In 2008, they introduce the DeepSea at $ 9,000. What is rolex thinking?? A Rolex goes from $ 4,700 to 9,000 in such a short span. I know they redid the watch, and the DeepSea has no peer, but why stop making the Sea Dweller. I feel they are really losing out on a ton of future SeaDweller folks. Unless, Rolex is thinking, people who can't afford the jump to $ 9,250 will have to settle for the Sub at $ 7,250. Rolex knows that people will climb over themselves for the new sub when it hits in a few months.
I just feel that Rolex went overboard and made a crazy Sea dweller priced at almost $ 10,000 with the tax. Thats quite a jump for a watch that was $ 5,000 bucks a few shorts years ago!!
Anyway, of course, I'm gonna buy myself a Deepsea very soon, so Rolex knows what they are doing, cause I would probably buy it at any price!!
The Rolex marketing machine sucks me in everytime!!

Im a very soon future DEEPSEA owner (bonus in Aug/Sept). The law of Supply and Demand plays a nice role. If its too expensive then nobody will buy it!!!!!

Actually, I am sure you can purchase a BNIB Deepsea for about 7k!!

Good Huntings and Negotiations,

Al

I picked mine up for $8,325 out the door. Basically it was 10% off retail and the AD ate the sales tax.

The DSSD is a fantastic watch. It is my favourite from my collection of 7.

It is not fair to compare the price of a Deepsea with a regular Sea-Dweller, the former is much more complex and expensive to make/test.

Thanks for the replies guys, Im in florida, and I called a few AD's and they all seem to say they will knock off 10 percent off the retail, and I am hoping they will eat the Tax. Better yet, When I get 8,000 (very soon). I will walk into the AD with the 8k in cash and hope they will let me have my deepsea!!!

Forget the AD, check out the For Sale section here on TRF, I have bought/sold several watches here and heave dealt with Oscar (Bodybump) and Tony (Justrolexes) although there are numerous other great sellers here, these are the only 2 I have personally dealt with and been very pleased and saved thousands from AD prices even with sizable discounts You should be able to get a V serial DSSD LNIB between $6400-6800 and BNIB under 7k... Good Luck,

Adam

New Deepsea

Just bought (less than a weak) Rolex Deep-sea Sea-Dweller (love every bit of it), I noticed the date code appears to be 2009. I was wondering is there any obligation from the jewelry store to inform me of the date of manufacture?

My Opinion

ALCON,
- I was very happy to buy a like new used K-series 16600 SD (last with the lug holes) for $4K USD. The price for a like new used 116660 Deep Sea in Tokyo right now is around $6.5-7K USD.
- At those prices, cost was not really a factor in my decision.
- As a former U.S. Navy Mineman, I just love the Maritime tool watch tradition of the Sea Dweller series (1665, 16660, 16600).
- I also like the fact that I almost never see a Sea Dweller in the wild.
- In fact, yesterday a Sub owner was looking at my watch and asked me what that thing on the side was (HEV).
- To me, the Deep Sea is a whole new line of watch that will need to build its own tradition and following.
V/R,
Mike

okay... Here is my take on this issue...

1. How many price increase between 06 and the introduction of DSSD?

2. Can you really compare a SD to a DSSD based on the price. IMO, they are different watches.

3. Because of their annual price hike - it helps Rolex to keep a decent resale value... No?

Agreed, hate their marketing, but love the watch!

Isn't the Euro - Dollar exchange rate also to blame for this? Massive price increases in the US. I'm not sure we had had as heavy price increases here in Europe...?

Then Again, a DSSD is 7300 euro in Finland. With the current exchange rate it's about 9000 usd.

In december -09 we saw Euro/Dollar at 1/1,53! So that would have been 11.600 usd!!!

Don't worry, the new Sea Dweller will bridge the gap between the old SD and the DSSD. Got my order in already!
