The chrono function in the Daytona is engaged by a vertical clutch.
This is different from most chronos that simply throw a set of triangular-toothed gear wheels into mesh with a 'crash'. The vertical clutch method only reduces amplitude and autonomy, or increases 'wear & tear', by a few small percentage points. It won't materially affect the time for required service. Rolex designed the movement with constant use of the chrono function taken into account, so feel free to use it that way if you want to.
