New Sub

I am new to the forum and have enjoyed reading some of the conversation on this site. I am looking at purchasing a 16610 sub to go along with my stainless and gold datejust. I have been looking at new watches, what is the deal people are talking about the randum serial numbers on the last of the non-ceramic? I just thought a V in the number indicated a newer model.

Welcome to TRF!

Until 2010, for many years Rolex have been using a serial numbering system for their watch cases that begin with a letter followed by six numerals. Folks in the watch world use these to loosely determine when a watch was made. There are many threads here and on other web sites listing these, just search and you will find a huge amount of material on the subject.

The new serials look more like a car's vehicle identification number to me. Intermixed letters and numbers. Then again, 16610 Subs have appeared using the new system.

The latest Submariner, the 116610, is a redesign of the case, dial and bezel with a new clasp as well. The new bezel uses a ceramic insert instead of aluminum, the material used since the Sub's inception in 1953.

This place is a wonderful place to learn. Simply keep asking, and search the resources and you will be astounded! The folks here are first rate!

Here is a link to the section I was referring to: http://www.rolexforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22

Enjoy your stay!

Welcome to the Forum -- V is the serial used just before the new random numbers. The randoms are the last of the 16610's

I purchased a new 16610 with the random serial number 3 weeks ago from a NYC AD. I paid the full price. The fact that the 16610 is discontinued with a dwindling supply of them being offered new, is likely to firm up the price AD's are selling them for.

Thanks,
Ken

AD's know that they can't get anymore 16610's and the new Sub (116610LN) is going for $7250; so they will very likely not discount any of the remaining 16610's. I know a couple AD's that have been trying to stock up on them for this very reason.

You may find some of the TRF sellers in the mid to upper $5k range, which would equate to 5 - 10% off, but the supply is not abundant.
