Was there a 2 tone 1680?
When did Rolex roll out the 2 tone submariner? Is this a mix and match? I think we have seen this auction before.

Yes, but with blue dial and bezel.
But, this looks like a frankenwatch. |

I think the owner is a forum member here.
I will say it again here Rolex never made a 1680 TT watch. It was never in any catalog.

I have never seen one or a ref no for one but on this web site http://www.vintagesubmariner.com/vintagesubs.html they are saying
"The 1680 also marked the philosophical transition of the Submariner from a pure "tool watch" built for serious divers to also being built and sold as a luxury sports watch. I say this, because the 1680 was the first reference to be sold in a steel and gold version ("two-tone" or "bi-metal") and also in an 18 carat gold model." It certainly would be nice to know for sure. |

The website is WRONG and he should correct it.
Rolex NEVER made an acrylic crystal TT Submariner. The 1st ever TT Rolex Submariner was ref #16803 with a Sapphire Crystal Around 1985-6 Below it shows you that the 1680 is only available in SS or Gold

well that would certainly explain why I cannot find applicable reference numbers. so the only 1680s produced were either the SS ref 1680 and the all gold (18kt) 1680/8 ?
edit: your pic only just showed up....thanks for that info. |

Def a franken.... it would have a nipple dial if anything, and I have never seen a diamond bezel on a tt sub.

Blaine model # R16800A referenced in your pics is for a model 1680. In the master catalogs from the late 1970's this is the reference number given for a 1680 Submariner.
