newbie from downunder

Hi all, I just wanted to log in and say g'day.

I recently inherited a Rolex from a family member and have been reading up on its history, plus all the other valuable info on here. Its a 6298 but without the word "explorer" on the dial. Although I'm in Australia I believe my relative may have purchased this in Canada, at least he lived there around the time it was made I believe in 1953 (from the serial number).

So far the main thing I've learnt from here is "DON'T TOUCH THE DIAL!!" although I think the patina makes it look quite distinguished, so that won't be an issue. :)

Anyhoo thanks for the great info, I'll keep on reading. Heres the only pic of it that I have online so far. (please excuse the watch on the left but I inherited that from my dad and has great sentimental value to me. :)

EDIT: Oh I forgot to add when I recevied the Rolex it didn't have a bracelet, but managed to purchase a geniune Rolex bracelet that you see on it, but I know its not like the original.

Thanks for the welcome!

I'm in South Aus, Mark.

After having a look around I've seen some amazing watches on here, unfortunately this will have to be my only Rolex for the time being.

The rest of my modest collection is vintage Japanese, mostly Seiko. Although that said I have just put a deposit on my 25th wedding anniversary present - an Omega Seamaster Professional chronograph. When I get it next month I'll post a pic under the Omega section.

:
dont know about being unfortunate?
.... that 6298 has a bit of history and a nice "only one" to have

btw, on the caseback, what are the first letters before the year ie
11.1953, 1V.1953 ??

Perhaps you could take some photos (maybe include some closeups of the dial )and post it over the Vintage section....

Thanks mate, will do.

The only writing I can see on the case baceback is "X OYSTER CASE", so I assume you mean on the inside of the caseback. Unfortunately I don't have a case opening tool for this watch, but next time I get it serviced I'll take my camera.

Cheers

Phil

Just tried to take a closeup and a wrist shot, but alas my photography skills have failed me. The first photo I posted actually shows the condition of the dial better.

I'll have to get my wife's help on this one as she is the photographer in the family. (BTW they were taken at the same time, I just wanted to move the hands out of the way of the Rolex crown.)

To stop the watch (for taking photos)

..... unscrew the crown(winding mechanism at the side of the watch )and gently pull it out until it stops than when the required time is set, turn the crown slightly anti clockwise (if looking at the crown) that will make the watch stop ticking........ obviously after taking your shots, screw the crown back in original setting

btw love the 5 minute printing around your chapter ring..... very nice

cheers
