I don't care what anyone says about my watches. I know that I have a good handle on my finances and that's all that matters.

Ya - just looked it up on YouTube. It's Acura - but still damn funny!

Rolex is a luxury, if you can afford it and are comfortable with the decision who cares what someone else thinks?

My advice: don't share stuff with people who you know don't care or understand. I don't talk about the bond market with my mother but can with co-workers and some friends.

I think generally people will knock Rolex because it's seen as a completely excessive symbol of status. This is true but Rolex also has history, craftsmanship, quality and technology behind their pieces. Most people aren't aware of Rolex's heritage, and probably don't care- which is why, a place like this is so important.

It took 2 weeks for my parents to notice I had a new watch. I took another 2 weeks for Mom to ask when I picked it (SUB) up. I took another 3 months for my Mom to compliment and inquire who made it... I think watches are becoming more and more obsolete so interest in general is waning...

You know what? People spend their money on all sorts of things: cars, watches, carpets, properties, computers, music collections but the most important aspect shared amongst all these things are the memories they create. A Rolex can live on your wrist for a lifetime and be passed on to someone you love. What's the value in passing on something like that? Some would say no price is worth those memories. So you can ask your friend what a heirloom of this nature might be worth not only to him/her but the beneficiaries...

Disagree with your friend all you want but your bud probably spends money on stuff you wouldn't appreciate so to each his own...

Somebody tries to air an opinion about something I bought or aspire to...

my answer is along the lines of 'Whatsituya, copper what?'

When somebody learns my stereo system cost more than their car, they sometimes squawk until they hear it. Then they want to know where they can get one like it.

One of my Rolexes keeps time within a second a month. I've never seen a quartz do that without a radio signal.

And then there's my oft-repeated reply to the cost of a Rolex; 'It costs as much as a basket of cheap quartzes, but in ten years I can sell it for more than I paid, and you might get five bucks for your basket of cheapos at a yard sale. Which cost more?'

Thanks for all the comments, opinions and advice. I have seen that Acura commercial, and it is hilarious. But speaking of commercials, the old spice commercials are hilarious as well!

I have eight pairs of sunglasses, 3 Ray Ban, and 5 Oakley, all of which are different frame styles, and lens colors. People always ask why I need more than one. I always ask them why they have different color shirts, or how many pairs of shoes they have, to which they always say you cannot compare the 2 examples.

In my opinion, you can. I just don’t understand why people care about what you do with your own money.

That says it all! I often use the auto analogy as well. But I usually am not kind enough to make it a Buick. I usually say some people prefer Porsches and some people prefer Yugos. They both get you from point A to point B.

Now the one about telling my wife she has too many shoes? That's playing with fire!

Oh absolutely, that's why I included the disclaimer. Arguments that you can use on your mother and arguments you can use on your wife are in completely different categories, since all your mother can cut off are interest free loans and laundry service, while your significant other can cut off... significantly more valuable things.

As you may or may not know, I do not own a Rolex. But I hope to own one within one year. I decided to share my newly found passion for Rolex with family and friends. It turns out that there was only one person who encouraged me to make a future purchase. My one and only, my dearest Mother! But she may be biased because she too has an affinity for quality craftsmanship.

One of my friends went as far as to tell me that I cannot afford one, and that I was being ridiculous for wanting to spend so much money on a watch. Well, he was right about one thing, I currently cannot afford one, but I total disagree with his last statement. I guess he is just one of those people who cannot appreciate something of fine quality and precision craftsmanship.
Remember, these watches are primarily luxury items with top notch brand equity and marketing.
Do not fool yourself that they are something more...they are just watches.
Quality and precision craftsmanship?
Stick around here and look at the threads with quality control issues...

Look around here and you'll notice not one rolex has a complication, or a tourbillion, etc.

Owning a rolex on credit or if you cannot afford it is almost an oxymoron.

Everyone has their own reasons for owning their Rolex, whether to commemorate an accomplishment in life, to remember one who had a passion for this brand, they like the history, want a status symbol, or just becuase they like how they look.
There is no wrong reason to have one, it's a personal decision, one way or another.

Just make sure you understand your reasons, to hell with what others think, and when you get your watch, enjoy your it everyday because you will be the one wearing it.

BTW, have you researched the history of Jaeger-Lecoulture?

I have never cared what other people think about what watch I choose to wear. It gives me great pleasure each day to have a Rolex watch on my wrist.
