Could this be the oldest oyster case in the world
Joking of course......This is not the kind of watch we normally see on here but I thought it might interest some of you. I picked it up in Brisbane recently and these kind of 18th C and early 19th C watches normally come with an inner and an outer case, and are generally known as a pair cased (2 cases) watches. This one is unusual in that it is a quadruple cased watch, meaning as well as it's normal two it has a further tortoiseshell & silver case and then on top of that, it has it's original protective outer case which was used when travelling distances by stage coach or horse etc, it just gave the watch that extra bit of protection. To still have this outer case is a bit like having the box and papers for my 5512, a rare extra I can only dream of. It is made of carved wood and looks a bit like an oyster shell (hence my title) with a covering of leather which has been moulded into the shape of it, and all totally original. It is made by well documented maker Edward Prior of London who was the son of George Prior, another well know maker. They were known for these kind of four cased watches and especially ones for the Turkish market, which is what mine was for, hence the Turkish numerals on the dial. Although it is a couple of hundred years old and a lot lot rarer than my 5512, it's probably only worth half as much, I guess it's just not quite as fashionable
