New Job :-(
I left my old Job a few months ago and moved to a larger role in another company (my reward was that I bought myself a Rolex!) - i turned down the chance for promotion.
My previous company were dissapointed that I decided to leave after 18 months - I made a big impression and got very good feedback from the leaders and VP's. My new job is not working out as planned and I contacted the previous company who said that they were sorry that things not working out but they have moved to an advanced position with regard to filling my old job and my bosses (the one I would now prefer) .... I'm going to see my old boss in a week or so time (he is in US) and see how I would be considered. I feel bad for myself and my old company (Me leaving left them with an issue to solve ... skillset and experience) .... part of me wishes I could turn the clock back. Today I packed my Rolex up and put it away ... until I find a job that I am going to enjoy ... I dont hold up much hope with my old employer, although they did not rule anything out - I kinda caught them by surprise when I rang to enquire about the possibility of re-engagement. The MD agreed to meet with me at the end of October for dinner and a chat (he's a good guy, and said he would keep his ears open for me). I feel like a bum ..... What should I do? |

Things like this happen. I would go and talk to my old boss for sure and be honest with him. At the same time, look out for another opportunity with a company you might like...do not feel bad about you situation at all.

will, in the current situtation, at least you have a job to go to and bills getting paid, even though you are not enjoying it - it happens, and you just need to pull through this "difficult" time.
look on the bright side, there is a slight chance of going back to your old empolyer/company - fingers crossed for you as for packing up the Rolex, not too sure about that to be honest, but whatever makes you happy really. |

Have you tried begging???
I think most of us have made that mistake in some sort of capacity or another. The grass always seems greener on the other side. Try and be as frank as possible with your boss at diner. Everyone has the right to test the waters and try to advance. He has to understand that. But, in this case, I would commit to a period with him to make him feel comfortable with you and that you won't be running next time an opportunity comes up. Good luck dude.

I was in kind of a similar position last year
A bank I was contracting for\ earning real good money let me go as the UK was going into the recession & I took on a public sector contract on 40% less but fairly safe for ongoing extensions. 4 months into my PS contract - the bank asks me back on same money. I said would have to be a substantial length of contract which they gave me. So I gave a weeks notice & moved back to bank. 48 hours into my new contract & another round of redundancies announced. I couldn't believe HR would let them rehire me with that in the pipeline & my boss swore it was a bolt out of the blue. There was a consultation process with unions, work was being off-shored etc so I managed to hang in there for 7 weeks. Chance would have it someone from my old public sector team left & there was a vacancy. Someone from my old team mentioned to my manager & he said they'd take me back as I knew job, minimal training etc. I kind of felt I went back with tail between legs & a few people took great delight on me being back (knowing I was back on my 40% less money). However, as a family man had to put my own feelings aside, it paid the bills & the good money I earned in those 7 weeks paid for our summer holiday last year to Spain Sometimes you gotta do what you've gotta do & that can involve a lot of pride swallowing. If you've bills & a family to look out for & there's a chance of getting the job back - nothing to lose & everything to gain. |

You took a chance and it's not working out. That's what you have to keep doing. The days of the 35 yr vet climbing the ladder to the top are over. You always have to keep looking and considering your future and your worth. Don't just look at next year, but 5 years and 10. One of the smartest guys I went to school with has trudged along climbing a small corporate ladder. A real waste. He's comfortable and became lazy. Others with 1/2 his ability took chances and became HIGH flyers. A couple retired before 40. Really. Never stop looking, and don't let one mistake deter you from trying again. My father came out of retirement for a once in a lifetime opportunity and worked for 10 more years. He was still looking!
Note my sig line.

Right now in the UK I would (& do) consider myself lucky to be earning.
Speak to your old boss by all means but make sure it's not a case of 'rose tinted glasses' before you make any move I reckon. Good luck either way mate.....

The job market these days is not for the weak of heart. You've got to stay flexible and take things as they come.
Sometimes that may mean swallowing your pride, but if humility is what it takes to keep a roof over your head and food on the table, then humility it is.

This sometimes happens to divorced folks, too...
They forget why they split to begin with and go back without that being resolved.

Never look back, Life if full or risks some pay and some don't, one thing for sure is don't give up and don't look back.
The old company thing is not that good of a call IMO since they didn't like the fact that you left, if they hire you back they will make sure to make you feel you owe them your life and they will never treat you the same way as before and also say goodbye to promotions... So my advice is knock new doors and forget about the past... Don't under value yourself so that other can value you...and just keep on trying and I'm sure good things will come your way

Hey Mate,
You left for a reason originally so something must not have been 100%. You took a chance and it didn't pan out, shit happens. At least you had a crack at it and now you don't have to wonder what the result would have beeen if you didn't have a go. Relax, enjoy your Rolex have some fun. Cheers |

Thanks Guys ....
I'm calling a few people in my network to see what opportunities currently exist. I'm looking forward to seeing my old boss (who I dearly respect) for a beer and dinner and to see if there is any opportunity of re-engagement ... at a more senior level (like his job) .... The grass is never alwaya greener ... my advice is to ensure there is some grass there. Returning to a previous employer is not impossible ... I left on good grounds and can (if appropriate) fit right back in and drive the company forwards .... Still feeling a bit of a dork .... but hey, Carpe Diem ! |

Oddly, I know several guys in that boat. I can't believe it sometimes, but I have a friend who married the same woman at least three times.

So ... I have given up hope of rejoining my previous company ... my queries are being met by silence ... Not a time to keep my hopes up ....
Will have to start to take the calls from recruitment consultants who are interested in me ... such a shame because I liked my previos job ... just my new one promised the earth and delivered hell ... |

This happens all the time. . . I went through the same thing and my old employer basically said tough luck. You just have to pick yourself up and move on. You'll find something better. . . it will just take time. I did.

Look I think we all should aspire to be happy in our jobs...perhaps the current economic climate might qualify that for some of us. But if we persist in an environment that makes us unhappy and that System, or you, is unlikely to enable improvements then the end result takes a toll on both physical and mental health. If the job you left seems good to you then you have got an "opening" if the appointment with the MD still stands. I wouldn't go in on the "back foot" , don't sell yourself short, you obviously have skills that company can use. I'd still be exploring other options though, consider yourself in the Market!. Good luck anyway with your endevours.

Well I got totally ignored by my previous employer ... my old boss got a roasting cause I contacted his boss ... he's not very happy about it.
They sent me a really nasty email .... I replied reminding him that I do not work for them anymore and had nothing to lose by making contact to enquire about current vacancies .... If that is how they treat ex-employees enquiring about re-engagement ... thankl the lord I dont work for them still !!! I feel like a right silly ***** now ..... |

Just be very mindful your old boss contacting your current employer, to spill the beans...
People can turn nasty very easily. Be prepared and if it doesn't happen, count your blessings. |

There's no beans to spill ... he's just annoyed that I have contacted them to discuss re-engagement and he has had his ear bitten off by his boss.
I dont think and hope there is any malice there ... just surprise and probably unexpected request from me. |
