Winders
I’m using more watch winders. Besides the benefit of having the watch set correctly and keeping time, is there any other benefit? Does it hurt to leave them sitting around? (Oils etc) I have 3 orbita’s I need to get a couple more. Has anyone heard of a winder hurting a watch (over winding etc) I’ve seen some decent looking ones for $100-$200.

I use to use a winder when I have 7 watches!! trim it down to 2 and didn't need it anymore. I wear my 2 on a regular basis and love it...

You can't over wind an auto, otherwise wearing it would damage it.
Some makes of watches needs to be rotated certain directions etc. Having a winder is just personal preference/convenience. The modern oils in Rolex will not dry out like the older oils. Some watches are sat in dealers stock not used for years without problems. If you have your watch on a winder it will wear the movement more than not used and left unwound. Having the watch on the winder, it is set ready to go. There are for's and against's for a winder. And I am sure you will get the usual don't need a winder, your wrist is the best winder and they are a waste of money (even though we are on a site that discusses stupidly over priced watches) replies along soon. It is up to you.

Winders are a complete waste of money unless you have a watch with complications that takes you an ages to reset everything. Simple movements, and i cant think of one Rolex here, do not need a winder. When they are sitting in AD's for months on end, they are static and not all spinning around on winders.

I just find it very amusing that people that have spent the sort of money Rolex ask for their watches can then say that winders are a waste of money and they are too expensive for what they are.

I like them for two reasons; 1. It looks nice on my dresser, 2. I dont have to worry about setting them every-time I want to wear a certain watch.
I guess it really depends on how many you have and how often they are worn. It is never a waste of money if it makes you happy and serves a purpose. |

I agree with Padi about needing a winder with a simple date complication. But the GMT is more of a pain to set, as you have to set the 24 hour hand in conjunction with the minute and second hands, then go to the hour hand and set the date and hour. So I find keping it on a winder simplifies things.

I bought a winder before I even purchased my watch.
