I may have accidentally slain my Monster...

Evening all,

I had a bit of an accident with my Seiko Black Monster the other day - as a general rule, I like to leave my BM close to a lamp before I go to bed, so I can properly charge the luminous material. Unfortunately, I left it a little too close to the bulb, and then fell asleep I wake up shortly after, and the watch is literally scalding to the touch, incredibly hot - I move it away and let it cool down. Unfortunately, the outer ring of the dial has warped and peeled away from the main section of the dial, which is stopping the second hand around 9 o'clock.

It's being sent off to the watchmaker to see what he makes of it, and I'm hoping the damage is purely cosmetic. I hope I haven't managed to boil the oils or bugger up the movement, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

Moral of the story - watches don't like hot light bulbs!

I'll keep this updated, but I get the feeling I'm going to be a bit sheepish for a bit. Once I get it sorted, I'm sure it'll be a good story to tell though!

Cheers

Chris

Good luck Chris. I am certain you have great watchmaker connections ...otherwise, for < $200USD, you could have a new Monster!!!

I haven't had the chance just yet Anders, but there isn't a huge amount to see, just a small gap between the rehaut and where the outer part of the dial has come away. This picture shows where it is:

Thanks for all the kind words, guys, the watch will be dropped off with our guy at the shop, hopefully he'll be able to work his magic on it

Is the watch still running well? Is it making wierd noises or movements? If not, then i guess it is purely cosmetical damage..

goodluck with it buddy.

It's hard to say as the second hand is catching where the dial has come loose - it will start ticking if you coax it over by wiggling the main hands, but there's no way of getting it to go for more than a minute without help

If it's coming loose around the minute track that should be an easy fix as that part is separate from the rest of the dial.

That's what I'm hoping for, Buz, as I say, I'm just a little worried I may have done damage to the movement

That sucks Chris The chapter ring is separate so it should be an easy fix. Many people mod theirs, so hopefully it'll be back on your wrist in no time

The Monster is dead...long live the Monster! Got a quote back for repair today (had to be sent down to Seiko UK), and the cost of repair is so high, it makes more sense to just buy a new one. I'm disappointed, but you live and learn, eh? Hope to get another at some point in the future, just not right away

Sorry to hear that Chris, definitely disappointing, but as you said you can always pick up another one That's the good thing about the Monster . You could also try a Sumo instead

I just loved the honesty of the Monster, and I'm certainly gonna miss it until I'm in a position to buy another. Still, I have others to keep me company for the time being, even if they lack the character of the Seiko

Sorry to hear that, one time I tried charging the lume of an old seiko by placing the flash of my DSLR right up to the crystal, the dial turned from blue to yellow in one area.

Bad luck Chris but UK sellers have them on the Bay for $200.

There are some excellent prices on the 'bay, in fact, the seller I got it from originally has another at what seems to be pretty much the lowest price on there at present

Sorry to hear about your Black Monster :(

I'm wearing mine as we speak. In fact, when I do wear the monster in circulation, I wear it to bed as well. The lume stays lit almost all night. Sometimes I wake up @ 3-4AM, and I can still make out what time it is on the dial !
