"Root Beer" GMT Question
OK, I'm a ninnie... I posted this earlier in the wrong Forum section... please forgive my newbie faux pas!
-------------------------------------- I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what my GMT is worth... here's what I have: I own a 16753 Rolex GMT Master, the "root beer" model with the "nipple" dial. It is 14K and SS... Serial number 6275XXX. I am the original owner of the watch, bought it April 2, 1983 (I still have the sales ticket). I paid the then-princely sum of $2,231.25! It has neber been on anyone's wrist except mine. It was purchased from an authorized dealer in the Fort Worth, Texas area. The watch has had Rolex service twice, the latest being March 28, 2002. The service included: (1) Factory Movt Service-acrylic xta,, gskts& pres prf, (2) Refinish case and bracelet, (3) Set of hands - Y/G lumni, (4) Brown & Gold Bezel insert with Yellow Nos, (5) Winding Crown, (6) Case Tube, and (7) Gasket. Price paid for the service was $438 plus Texas state sales tax. The watch has zero wrist time since that service... it looks new! I do not have the service invoice from the earlier service. At that service, I had the original "root beer" dial and bezel replaced with black/black (big mistake, I never did like the black/black as well as the "root beer"). I did have the foresight to keep te original bezel (which was reinstalled at the time of the 2002 service). I still have the original box, (unfilled) warranty card, and service invoice. So, after all that, I am hoping that someone can tell me aproximately what this watch is worth. I am really only asking for my own information, the watch is not for sale at this time. Thanks, and all the best! Rob |

You have the bracelet, as well? If so, my rough guess is $4,000.

For that package, from original owner, you should ask for at least $5,000. A reputable dealer which has a bigger reach that you would and more contacts, could probably collect $6,000 for it.

No more than $4200 to $4500 with box and all papers.

From my recent search for a true rootbeer, I would say that the 16753 rootbeer as your was prior to having the conversion was worth a premium of a couple of hundred more than the black on black TT 16753. Still the nipple dials on either version are highly desirable. I would say from $4K to $6K depending on condition and Box and Papers.
Some would say that B&P don't mean a lot but, from what I have seen when pricing accessories, the GMT booklets from 1978-1982 go for $200 to $500 and are hard to find. The true era original box would go for another $500, so B&P would matter. For this reason I paid considerably more than the watch value to get the complete package. I do think that a lot of collectors would downgrade the price for a black dialed GMT with a rootbeer insert. If trying to sell I would go Black and Black or better yet try to source an original Rootbeer nipple dial to put the watch back to its original configuration. You should be able to recoup much of the restoration cost by selling the black nipple service dial. Congrats on having a nice watch that is highly desirable and worth double what you paid for it. Lets us see some pics. |
