Another Red Sub question

I’ve seen this 1680 & have requested better pics from the seller who says it has a 2.6 million serial, circa 1970 with original twin lock crown

Currently priced at $10950, so I’d also have to factor in approx 25% tax & import duty to UK so say $13687 / £8883 ish

May I beg your indulgence & ask for your opinions please ?

Thanks guys

Wow, that is a ton in tax. IMO, it'd be better to wait and find one locally.

You may want to look at SAM911s thread about a red sub he is looking at. SAME AS YOURS for $10,500 from

http://www.wannabuyawatch.com/indpages/37263.html

If you are not looking at this site, be careful!

Also, as I posted in the other thread, this watch has a 2.6 million serial number. Some believe that the very latest meters-first dials ended with 2.45 million and after that point they were feet first only. This suggests that the dial may have been swapped out at one point.

Use caution when dealing with 1680 Red's. There are a lot of "dial swaps" and "refinished dials".
As many of us have said before "buy the seller before buying the watch".

2.6 is a little late IMO. I would live by Mark Lerman's write up on the 1680 red

Here is my 2.69 serial number 1680. I think 2.6 is a little late for a meter first red sub?

There are plenty of them out there. It all depends what you are looking for. If you can find a complete "Chocolate-aka Tropical Sub" with box and papers--I would highly recommend going in that direction-especially if it is unpolished and in pristine original shape!! Here is mine for your reference-definitely one of my favorites in my collection-Happy hunting and always buy the seller-this one is the one in Mark's post on Red Subs and was purchased out of his personal collection--thanks Mark!!!:

Hi
I was wondering, if you take the 1680 meters first to Rolex Service Center (RSC) to get it verified, would that help ? There might be possibility that there were some left over dial/cases .
If the dial / case has been swapped, RSC would not verify the watch.

Lets hear what you think. Thanks

Interesting thought. Not sure what the RSC would do in this situation. Regardless, you would have to buy the watch first and then take your chances. A bit risky IMO.
