1987 date just water resistancy
Hi all,
I am a recently proud owner of a 1987 steel/gold date just. It has been serviced but not by Rolex and seals replaced. My questions are 1. Do you think it will be waterproof? And to what ? 100 metres etc? Service performed by Austin Kaye in London 2. Does anyone have a date just or similar that is 20 plus years old that they use daily in all conditions/ environments e.g swimming etc 3. Does the plexi glass weaken the water resistance ? And is there any point changing the glass to sapphire crystal or is that not possible? And would it improve the watch if it was possible? 4. Do I have to treat this timepiece any different to a newer Rolex bearing in mind it's age? as I intend to wear daily Your views would be appreciated Thanks |

I've got a 50's TOG and a 60's DJ, along with others. For swimming, both do fine. I wouldn't try any real depth, though. But, they weren't made for that anyway.
The plastic crystal is not a waterproof concern. Keep in mind that all of he original Rolex had plastic crystal-- including the Sub's. You really can't modify a plastic crystal Rolex to take a sapphire crystal. You would actually run a greater risk of losing the waterproof capability. The cases/bezels are made for one type or crystal or the other. My 50's TOG was my father's daily wearer, and it was never babied. These things are tough and made for regular use with a minimum of attention or worry. That's a big part of what makes them a Rolex. I would expect my older Rolex to be less able to maintain super accuracy, but after they're serviced, everything else is just fine. |
