Ah --the service debate yet again. If you feel need to service often-you may do so. If you want to wait till it is not working perfectly--do so. For me--every 10 years is probably fine but I like to check seal integrity and that is what will keep a dial from being attacked by the elements! So a pressure test in between overhauls-not a bad idea! Also-I use Mr. Bob Ridley now to service my vintage pieces and IMHO-he is the best around!!
In the end--do as you wish-it is your watch and everyone has a different opinion. Don't forget RSC is in business of making money and servicing watches so they would love you to service it every 5 years of course!!

I purchased my first Rolex (16610) in 1999 from my AD. Being a dutiful Rolex owner, I took the watch back to my AD in 2004 for it's recommended 5 year servicing, as per the Rolex owners manual. (BTW, the AD does have a Rolex certified tech on premises.) I handed my Sub to the AD and told him it needed to be serviced, then it went something like this:

AD: "what's wrong with it?"
Me: "Nothing, but Rolex recommends that it be serviced every 5 years!"
AD: "is the watch keeping time?"
Me: "Yes."
AD: "Any problem with the date mechanism?"
Me: "No."
AD: [handing the watch back to me] "Don't belive everything you read. If the watch is running fine leave it alone as opening the watch will more often then not cause more problems."

He then proceeded to point out the YG DD he was wearing, telling me that his watch was 15 years old and had never been service.

So, I took my watch back home with me, and to this day it still runs fine.

Where did you hear this, as far as I know, Rolex will contact you(if you sent it in)or your AD to explain what needs to be done before they start the servicing.....
