Rolex have incorporated the word "Perpetual" as another word for AUTOMATIC.

Any and every automatic watch in the world will stop if not worn for a certain period of time. And any and every automatic watch in the world will have to be manually wound to start it up again.

It was named perpetual as it was driven by the energy of its own components so its non exhaustive n continuous- just keeping the components tuned n winding the crown is among one of them
No external artificial source was used to deliver the power to it.

Yes Perpetual just Rolex speak for automatic and JJ there are some automatics you cannot manually wind. Some from Seiko like the cal 7s26 you must shake them to start.

Hi Padi,

'shaking' is still manually winding as per my Black Monster (7s26) etc.

Yes Eddie would agree but manual winding is normally associated with crown winding. The other forms of watch winding by wrist action, well ask JJ he is a bit of a watch winder. And is sometimes boasting about his perfect wrist size and large wrist. So one must assume his winding technique must see a lot of action. And don't forget he has just updated the Tosser list.

"Perpetual" is IMHO more of a "romantic" expression. Remember that Rolex made the automatic watch perfect, but in was in those early days, so in that era, there was great AWE over the fact that a watch could be automatic. I guess the expression "Perpetual" tried to capture that feeling.

Actually I dislike the word perpetual! In the USA many cemeteries use it in the burial grounds. Meaning that your loved one will be taken care of forever.
Sorry guys! but that word means ongoing without interruption. I know Boo! Boo! who does he think he is!

Well Perrelet invented the first self winding mechanism around 1770.Later Breguet improved it and called his winding system perpetuelles. Now perhaps this is Rolex got the idea to call there autos Perpetual. But John Harwood from the Isle of Man UK around 1923 took out a UK patent for the automatic winding watch. Now he went on with backing to produce many thousands of these watches. But mainly owing to the depression in the 1930s in the UK he went bust. Now old Hans of Rolex being a very clever but very shrewd man bought and took up this John Harwood auto-wind patent for the RWC. And in the very early 1930s incorporated it into the oyster design case another one of Hans acquired patents, and also the waterproof screw down crown patent. Now this acquired patent auto wind mechanism only wound around 300 degrees. But Rolex improved the design by the help of Hans brother in-law.Who made it more efficient by winding a full 360 degrees, and a power reserve then of around 36 hours.

Alex,

If I wore a Rolex when I was 14 I would have NEVER needed to wind it, what with all the wrist activity I remember having at that age.

No "tosser" comments, please JJ.

I'm a bit older than 14 and need help with my winding now days.

I use a power winder. Keep it by the bed. You can't overwind these things so I just keep it on slow in case I oversleep
