AD's Explorer inventory

In my area there are a few AD's who have on display both the 36mm and 39mm Explorer. I know in recent years the 36mm was a slow seller, which is likely at least part of the reason Rolex introduced a 39mm model.
These days the AD's do not seem to be selling either version of the the Explorer, because the watch's just sit their in the display case, week after week, month after month. The salesperson explains the 36mm is the discontinued version and the 39mm is the new version. At that point I think the customer becomes confused, undecided about which model to prefer, so they choose neither.
Anybody here agree, disagree, that AD's should do what they can to sell off the remaining 36mm Exp inventory they have and that once its done this will help customers choose the 39mm Exp?
I asked a couple of AD's why they don't discount their discontinued 36mm's and they tell me "it's discontinued, which means collectors item".
I am not shopping for an Explorer. I bring up this topic only because I find it an interesting subject to discuss the sales stratgies of AD's. All comments and opinions welcome here to this thread.

When I bought my 36 I was at an AD that had them both, and was glad to have the opportunity to second-guess myself. In the end it gave me more conviction that, for me, I was making the right choice.

I see your point, and agree it can work both ways.
When I was considering to buy an Explorer, and tried on both the 36mm and 39mm, I became indecisive. Had there been only one Explorer to choose from, I may have bought that one.
