Thought Please

Just browsing through a police auction and located this. Anyone want to help me out and determine if this is worth anything. I realize the dial is bad, but is it gilt? What about hammerhead crown? 1.4 mil serial and case back dated to match. Just want to know what some of the experts would purchase this for.

Auction ends tomorrow.

Pete

I would not touch that piece ... the crown is wrong, dial looks like it is abused and the hands look ... new

Agreed on all points. The thing is, case back, serial number and movement all match. If I could get it cheap, would it be worth it to get original replacement parts.

Good ol' Police auction. Looks like a good combination of old and new parts? I wouldn't have anything to do with it...

I think that it is always an admirable thing to do when an older watch is "rescued" and brought back to it's vintage luster.. The new crown, insert, and hand-set may mean that it was cared for and mechanically perfect..

If the watch is indeed a good bargain, it may be an interesting project to source an older insert and hand-set... likely a dial too, although a top notch re finisher may be able to resurrect it...

These sort of undertakings may cost as much as the watch is worth though, so it's not for the weak kneed.........

If it works, what's wrong with just enjoying it as is? Why does it have to be original and perfect? I know from a collector point of view that is ideal, but I'm just saying...if the price is right why not?

I think I'm going to have to pass on this one. it's up to $2800 and I'm just not willing to gamble that much. Although, I saw a 1675 go for 12K some where on here. Anyways, thanks folks.....I'll just stick to looking for that 68 red sub.

Don't touch it, especially for $2800!

Thanks folks.....I'm passing. I was just thinking about flipping somethings that I may find a deal on to get the red sub I'm looking for. I'll do it the old fashion way......lie to my wife and tell her I lost the money gambling :)

I would have left the original hands on there, even if they were black, corroded and crooked. Did someone think the new hands would just blend right in? looks terrible...
