Prices US vs UK
I am planning to visit the UK (London) next week and would like to buy a watch for my wife
Are the prices significantly more expensive than in the US, considering the VAT export refund? Thank you very much andre |

If you tell me what watches you may want to see, giving me the number, i will tell you what price they are from the catalogue here in the UK, and you can multiply by about 1.6 to bring it to USD. You may get a refund on the VAT too because you are going overseas. Not too sure how it works but it is 20% of the MRP, thats a fifth off.

Hi Andre,
If you want the price without VAT in the UK, just divide the MRP with 1.2 Make sure you buy at an AD that refunds you the full amount as well, if you are in a position to choose of course. Enjoy!

As Anders points out, the rebate, if it's the HMRC one and not through a company that takes a cut for itself, real term discount from the rebate alone comes to 16.67%. It's not a case of just deducting 20%. You should be able to negotiate for a discount as well, as it costs the retailer nothing to give you a VAT rebate, so you could pick up a very nice deal

I found the prices of rolex reasonable at the airport if they have the one you want in stock. However other brands not quite as good since most other brands offer large discounts at AD's from what i have seen. I haven't had a chance to shop around in the city at all.

yes it is actually 16.6%
OP: you dont take 20% off the price you add 20% on to the original price ( before VAT) so when you take it off it is actually 16.6% reduction.

It'll be an absolute first if there is something available cheaper in the UK than available in the USA. It is called 'Rip-off Britian' for good reason.
