Oxidised hands on 1680, would you...
Been offered a 1680 (white), mid 70's based on serial no. (4.1m), apparently very nice / mint original dial and strong case... but it has quite heavily oxidised hands.
Now I know this condition effects quite a lot of vintage pieces, but what I want to know is if it's likely to get worse, or if with a service and new seals etc, it will stabalise? I'm assuming it's had some water / moisture in there in the past to go like this, but the dial seems flawless, strange that just hands were affected...? I don't mind the look of them, looks quite 'vintage' to me, which is not surprising I suppose but what I don't want is for them to continue to deteriate so that in 20 yrs time they're dust... and I need to try to source what would be by then near non existent period replacement hands So, avoid this one or be brave as it's really not that serious? Sorry, no pics at the moment, watch is in a safe deposit box, will try to get him to send some to me to post up. |

You should leave hands on and if you want to you can have a good watchmaker seal them. Fyi

I agree with Ken, but there is no shortage of nice 1680's out there without oxidized hands....maybe you should keep looking????

If the dial and hands are exceptional and to your satisfaction, then go for it. Good luck.

And I also agree with Clay-- far too many to compromise.

Need pictures ideally, but there is plenty of White 1680 out there, however if the watch makes you smile then buy it

1680/1665 tritium hands without oxidation aren't hard to come by. I would not let that stop me.
