Explorer 36mm confusion

This is my first post on the board. I would like to purchase my first Rolex, and think the Explorer I 36mm is the way for me to go.

This watch has been around for a while, and there seem to be a number of iterations through which it has gone.

Is there any anything I should be aware of -- changes? / versions? / movements? / something? -- that I should aim for or alternatively avoid in making the right decision?

Also, what would be considered a "good deal" as price goes while still being in the realm of reasonability?

Welcome to the forum! The 36mm has been discontinued and replaced with the new 39mm version. It now has the upgraded clasp, solid center links, matte dial, short hands, etc.

Sorry but your question is too vague..

The Explorer has been around for 60 years and has gone through many changes while still keeping the same classic look..

Find one you like, then research that version to see if it makes sense to purchase....

After a little digging, I see that I was absolutely too vague. Sorry about that.

I am partial to the 14270, which is the 36mm Explorer I--if I am not mistaken. From its inception, to the end of its production run, would there be any significant changes that I should be aware of in making a decision?

I like the aesthetics of the 36mm better than the 39mm re-design...

Are there appreciable differences between the 14270 and the 114270?

I see there are different movements (3000 vs. 3130 respectively). Any significance?

This is only a matter of personal preference.. The 3000 movement was the predecessor to the 3130. In ~89 Rolex "upgraded" the 3000 movement with a full balance bridge, larger balance wheel, and some other enhancements, which is something they do from time-to-time.. With watches that did not immediately get any other "upgrade", the watches became stamped with an "M" for Modified movement. The Sub 14060M is still around in that configuration. The 14270 also got a new bracelet/clasp and some cosmetics becoming the 114270..

If you want the "look" of the Explorer, I would say that you need to decide if these minor changes are what you want, or if you are happy with the earlier iteration.. I would not say that one is significantly better than the other, only slightly different.......

The 114270 was available up until this past year.. Perhaps you could still find a new on at some Dealers and the list price is just under $6,000...

So, the 14270 should be available for much less. You should be able to find a good example of either from 3,000 to 5,000, depending on condition... If you go back more than 20 years, the price may actually start going back up... These are very popular watches...

Condition is paramont with a dial that is not deteriorating and good hands and lume with a case that has not been refinished too aggressively.. Find the best example that you can for a price that you want to pay, but do not shop price alone.....

I have just joined this forum and I own 2 Explorers! 14270 and 16570. I have an early 14270 Explorer - non flip lock bracelet and side case holes (which I both love as it makes it the true tool watch).
