I'm somewhat new to Vintage Rolex so I'm trying to educate myself through books as well as this forum. I just picked up this 1.6 mil 5513 today and would like to get some feedback on it. It came on an updated 93150 bracelet with a fliplock clasp stamped "VC" which I've learned dates it to around 1978. The only question I have concerns the caseback. Most of the ones I've seen on 5513s are somewhat polished and smooth but this one has a machined finish to it in a circular pattern. I know it has been serviced at one time since it has the updated triplock crown with rubber gasket but other than that, I have no info on it's history.

The only reason that I can think of for the case back being like this, is that it must have had an engraving on it.

BTW Looks to be a nice watch, lovely patina and FF insert too

Nice faded fat-font insert! Don't worry about the bracelet - I wear all my vintage on the "newer" ones; I find them to be more substantial and secure.

Thanks for the responses. The seller did give me the option of getting the older rivet bracelet but it seemed very flimsy, I'll probably wear it on a NATO most of the time anyway.

Very nice, I agree with Phil the caseback was probably put on a lathe to remove an engraving. Probably a hand engraving as they tend to be much deeper than machine, this would also correspond with the age of the watch, most engravings were still done by hand back then. I see 2 small dots on the back which look like all thats left of the text. Shallow modern engraving done on a machine is quite easy to remove with emery paper...

You may consider getting a replacement case back and keeping the old one as it is the one that came with the watch. Otherwise you have a excellent piece of history. :)

No worries about the case back, I don't think I'll replace it, maybe have them polish it back out to look normal if possible. I may have someone open it up for me so I can look at the markings on the inside. I'm very happy with it and I got it for an excellent price.
