Start with blank image, then fill it with a shade of gray that matches your background. I used a gradient fill that was darker on top and lighter at the bottom.
Then copy your pic over it, and create the layer mask. just like you did in your pic. However... since you do not want to fully hide the image, change your brush opacity to about 80%, and paint over the hand and coat, while leaving your watch alone. Voila. the invisible man has arrived.
