16248 Datejust 18k Bark.. value help?

hi folks,

apologies if this is the wrong forum, i posted this in gereral discussion, but i reckon the vintage forum may get a better response....

i was collecting my sub from my watchmaker today (was having a serti dial fitted- looks great!), and we had a good long chat about all things rolex etc.

we got on the subject of 18k day-dates as i told him i was interested in buying a 18k with president and fluted bezel, in the future.

he told me he had a watch in the safe belonging to a customer, the customer was looking to sell.. would i be interested in buying he asked..

i had a look at it, and i think im going to buy it.. but, at a price..

please can you value this watch for me.. i may buy it to wear for a while then sell on if the price is right..

the watch in question is a..

1991 E serial, Datejust 16248, quickset, sapphire crystal.
18k yellow gold, 8210 bark jubilee bracelet, bark bezel, gold stick dial.

ive been searching around, this seems to be a rare watch.

is the bark finish desireable to the majority or the select few? they seem to be in very limited numbers- due to lack of popularity or sought after exclusivity?

is it a collectable rolex? would i have much bother selling/trading/flipping it if i changed my mind?..

sorry for all the q's.. im looking at this purchase as a stepping stone, the watch is in very nice condition with very little stretch and the price is very attractive.. however, i wouldn't want to find that i was stuck with it when i come to move it on (which could be in the not to distant future)..

From what I have been told by a few AD reps who been around Lomg time

The bark was never that popular and sold poorly and even costed more and the production run wasn't real long compared to the standard non bark

So it may be likely there are very few out there

It being all 18k gold has some collectible factor

I think it is bit harder to sell but I'm just basing that on having seen same ones listed many times on eBay and I listed my 18078 and had few responses.

But if the price is right of course it Can be bought or sold easy.

I noticed that, in the new 2011 catalogue someone posted, that a Presidential band was available with the bark finish. If under the bracelet section at the end of the document. Can anyone confirm this?

My guess is about 6K give or take depending on condition. Relatively speaking, it is a rare watch, but then again it's not highly sought after.

thanks guys.. if it truly is worth around $6000/£3700 then i should bite his hand off very quickly and not look back. thank you for your answers.

hopefully, when i come to sell, someone will be after a nice example of a 18k DJ with a bark finish.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the only bark is the bezel, right?

It has a regular 18K Jubilee bracelet and if it's in really good condition I wouldn't pay more then 4,5K for it.

the inner three centre links that compose the jubilee bracelet have bark finish.

the bezel is not bark finish. it is this exact same watch below, same bezel- not a bark bezel, it has hour markers and multiple strokes in betwen the hour markers. this is not a bark finish bezel, just the band...



..it is a rather attractive watch.
