Icon20 New Member: Daytona Request For Information

Hi Everyone.

I have joined this excellent forum because I am interested in purchasing a 2006 / 2007 (preferably 2007) Unworn Brand New Rolex Daytona in Stainless Steel or Two Tone SS with Gold. Regarding this purchase, I have a few queries I would appreciate help with:
  1. What sort of price am I looking at for either the SS or TT Daytona (UK Pounds if possible please)?
  2. Where should I buy the watch from taking that I am based in the UK?
  3. What is the exact thickness of the Daytona please?
  4. How accurate is the new Daytona; to within 4-6 seconds a day?
  5. A bizarre one but, how robust is the stop watch mechanism?
  6. How much of a premium am I likely to have to pay to get the Daytona without waiting?
  7. Is it possible to wear the Daytona all the time including using for running?

I realise this is quite a list but I thought it important to speak to people with experience of buying these fine watches before going out and buying one on my own.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on my queries.

Richard.

Hi Richard, welcome.

I can't do you much good on pricing in the UK. MSRP is $7900 USD (SS),getting one at retail can be a bit of a challenge though. I have seen LNIB examples on various sales fora for about $8800 USD. Not far off MSRP + tax.
Here is a chart for the various dimensions,

Accuracy will vary between examples, mine is -1sec a day. I'm not sure how to compare the strength of the stop watch function. I've not had a problem with either the Daytona or my Speedmaster Pro.

As far as running with the watch...LOL! I'm a runner, I wear a Rolex all the time running, no worries. The 4130 movement is rock solid.

Good luck!

Welcome to TRF, Richard.

Looks like Mike's answered most of your questions. Here in Auckland I can get the TT version for around US$9500 out-the-door. You'll also find that the SS version is very hard and expensive to come by....so the TT might be eventually a better (and wiser) choice.

Good luck - JJ

Thanks guys, you've been very helpful.

I notice that most people go for the SS Daytona. What is the best face combination for the SS version please?

Well, I only have the white but I have no problems reading it. I'd love tohave a black tocompare it to. I think it's mostly a matter of personal preference.

Welcome to TRF Richard like mike said finding one at list price is almost nil Now myself not a huge fan of the modern Daytona. But would sooner pay TT prices than pay more for a S.Steel version. Now as for dial choice well thats in the eye of the beholder, but the white dial seems to be the most popular. Now all the Rolex produced in the last 40 years are more than capable of the COSC standard for mechanical watches - 4 to + 6 seconds a day.And running the chrono function 24/7 should not harm movement in any way, perhaps a little bit less in the power reserve. But there is no need to run the crono function 24/7.The new in-house chrono movement seem to be very robust with very few reported problems.Just the very odd one with the reset chrono hand just a little offset, but thats a very minor thing. Now don't disregard a older model with the Rolex modded Zenith El Primo movement. That two is one of the best chronograph movement made today. Now for prices have a look around the various watch forums, they should be cheaper than retail stores. Now there is one place I can recommend in the UK in the link below a lady called Dee is very helpful, myself have bought several watches from them with excellent service and watches.Welcome to TRF

Thanks again.

I guess the situation with the SS is that it should be cheaper than the TT but is more to buy outside of the waiting list due to high demand. Like for like the TT is actually made of higher quality materials. Just a thought, is the SS version harder wearing than the TT due to 18 carrot gold being a softer material?

Also regarding the faces, am I correct in thinking that there are only the two versions (black and white) to choose from and no pearl etc? Makes the choice easier if this is the case.

Padi56: Thanks for the link, will take a look and ask around for prices.

In Steel, only black or white to choose from. In the TT, however, you will have several dials to choose from.

The TT would be a more practical buy when you think of the much lower price you'd be paying. The GOLD links in the TT version are all SOLID and not hollow as in most of the other TT Rolex models (exception being the new GMT-II and the newer Oyster and Jubilee bracelets!)

Of course, gold does tend to attract scratches but rest assured the gold is still 18 K and is quite hard. Remember that with 18 K gold, the actual gold content is 750 out of 1000, so the other 250 can be made up of special alloys to give added strength to the gold.

I'm pretty sure Rolex have taken that into consideration. Why not visit their newly improved website at www.rolex.com and see for yourself.

Cheers - JJ

Thanks JJ.
What is the waiting list like for the TT and how could I get on the waiting list if I decided to go that route? I have previously reviewed the new Rolex site and could not see any price lists. Also, I have noticed that where 2007 versions of the TT are listed for sale the RRP is actually higher than they are selling for. I guess this means that they have purchased the TT Daytona cheaper than the RRP and are still able to supply at a cheaper price? Is the RRP the price a enw customer ordering from Rolex would pay or is it in fact really meaningless?

Thanks for your help.

I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a waiting list for the TT Daytonas. They are freely available off the shelves and with good discounts too. At least here in Auckland, I can get a brand new TT Daytona from my AD for around US$9500 out-the-door, final price.

Remember, all TT and YG models are discountable by dealers as they have more "room" to play with on the pricing as compared with the SS models.

Buying in the UK

I have recently purchased an 18k Gold Daytona. Having searched the market and spoken to some of the authorised shops in Scotland, I ended up buying from a jewellers in Blackburn. I had been watching on Ebay and they seemed to have good feedback and had some very nice watches - most of which are brand new. I got over 25% discount on my watch and about 20% on the one that I bought for my wife. I was told by a friend (who is a jeweller) that 25% would be about the best I could get. Anyway picked up my new watches this week and delighted. I know they have some nice 2 tone advertised which seem better value than the SS which you will pay a premium for. I also dealt direct and did not go through Ebay as it would have cost him more which would have meant less discount for me. £17500 worth of watches for £13000 cant be bad!!! Ancient and Modern is the name of the company there and the guy I dealt with was Johnny. Had to wait just over a week for watches to arrive once ordered. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi DSK635.
I ended up buying a new Z series TT Daytona with a white MOP dial from an AD in Cheltenham. Got a good price and good service. Glad you got a good deal. I had seen Ancient and Modern advertising on Ebay and as you say, they looked professional. Any chance of seeing some photos of your new purchases?

Agree but IMO most are just because its so hard to get and at the moment top fashion agree with Mike getting a SS at list very difficult now.Myself although not a lover of the modern Daytona, would prefer the white dial. But prefer the Zenith powered model type dial.Welcome TRF.
