Anyone have experience importing a watch from the US to Canada? How much duty do I have t pay and I've heard people had bad experience shipping it through UPS they charge as much as 50% brokeage fee.

My experience

you will pay on the declared value:

GST
PST
5% excise tax.

All couriers will charge brokerage fees and it seems to vary widely. UPS I think is highest from my experience.
If it comes by mail, there are no brokerage fees however it might sit in the customs warehouse for weeks. It is up to you how patient you are. I usually ask for the watch to be sent my parcel post. I don't mind waiting.

What cdnwatchguy said. Use USPS if possible as the handling fees are the lowest. You WILL pay the said taxes when importing.

GST and PST are combined and it's now called 'HST'. The 5% is duty.

Note: Some provinces do not have HST they are still on a GST / PST system. In Saskatchewan for example, the PST is 5% so coupled with the GST, there would be a 10% tax owing. In Alberta there is no provincial tax so the tax owing in that province would come out at 5% for the GST only.

I'm not sure what system is in place in Ontario where the original poster is from.

Unless you live here......no PST. The 5% is labled as an excise tax, not duty. Not sure what the difference is probably just semantics. We are better off than a few years ago, the excise tax was 10%.

I am from Ontario, so does it mean I have to pay 13% HSt and 5% excise tax in a total of 18% of the declared value of the watch if I buy from the U.S. seller from the forum?

I don't know if the excise tax is on top of the HST or just on the declared value, but essentially, yes.
But contact DavidSW if you're planning on buying from the US. He'll explain how he handles the whole shipment process ;)

Whatever the declared value is, is what you will be charged duties on, including the 13% HST.

I lived in Ontario and had to face the 13% + duty ... when I had something valuable shipping from the states.
